Firstly, I own a 1989 BMW 735il and use the Roadfly message board for that car almost daily. I am considering buying a 230 or 280 sl and wanted to ask a few questions abut what to look for, parts availability, problem areas etc. I can't help but notice that this particular forum is not as populated as the other ones on Roadfly. Is this still a valuable resource or is there another forum that might be able to help me a bit more? Thanks for your indulgence.

I don't konw where to point you for good classic info. You're gonna have to google it to really find a good pocket of classic MB enthusiasts. Chances are it's not at the few MB specific forums.

230SL motor revs quicker because of fewer crank main bearings
230SL has rear drum brakes
230SL automatic is a harsh shifting car

injection system is the same on both

280SL has smoother/stronger power
both have 'kingpin' front suspensions, and many mounts that loosen and cause poor handling

rust is an ISSUE for any at this point - inspect very well,
top to bottom, inside and out
