Please help me.

I just bought a 1986 Merc. 300E with 198,000. Recently, one rear wheel has this grinding noise that starts around 40mph and also, the power steering comes on and off at times. I was hoping to get some advice here before I get slaugtered at the dealer. I'm hoping that it's not a major expense.

The noise sounds like a rear wheel bearing going bad, and the power steering pump problem could be a bad belt tensioner, causing the belt to skip around the pump pulley.
Good luck,
Daniel H

PS--find a local independent shop to go to...they can be a whole lot more reasonable
