Can someone tell me what type and grade of Differential oil I should be using on a 1990 735iL? Also, is there a filter that requires changing? How often should I be changing these items?

There is no filter to service for the diff on BMWs. The gear oil is 75w-90 or 80w-90 and you should check the owners manual to be sure. You can use regular or synthetic gear oil. just keep an eye out for leaks from either the side diff seals or possibly the pinion seal and you'll do your car a favor. Use a 10mm allen wrench for both the fill/drain plugs. Replace the aluminum seals for both plugs too if they are worn or used. If you have a limited slip rear end then use fluid/oil that says it has the necessary additives for this type diff.
