I purchased the old M Coupe (2001) when BMW added the e46 M3's s54 engine into it and really loved it. Now I have an 05 M3 and still really love the engine - but before I think of going back to the M Coupe (with the same engine!) I would like to know what the consensus is on whether or not BMW will add the next M3's engine (V8) into the M coupe in a year or so?

I did a search but couldn't find anything on this. Also, don't get me wrong - I think the current M Coupe is a work of art - engine included.

As I understand it, BMW MC found it unfeasible, production wise, to be able to install a V8 into the E85-86 platform from underneath.

This is just a guess, but by the time that the E92-93 get the V8, the E85-86's replacements won't be that far away (SOP -> 4Q'08), so the market might have to wait until the next-gen Z4 comes to get a V8??? <font color= white>

Interesting point -

But you know BMW...

I remember they said they were never going to do a coupe version of the Z4 and look at the beautiful machine they ended up putting out!

...Yes, they're masters at semantics.

<font color= gray>I remember they said they were never going to do a coupe version of the Z4 and look at the beautiful machine they ended up putting out!</font>

Were their lips moving? ;-)

Do you have a reference where they <u>actually</u> said that they wouldn't? Not some buff mag <i>saying</i> that BMW <i>said</i> they wouldn't, but a direct quote from a named BMW type?

<i>Automobile</i>, 8/02, said that there wouldn't be a coupe version (due to E36/8 sales, in their opinion).

OTOH, prior to that, <i>Roundel</i>, 1/02, reflected that there would be two body variants. If the 2nd wasn't intended to be a coupe, then what?

And, nearly a year earlier, <i>AutoWeek</i>, 3/19/01, mentioned that a folding hardtop, a la SLK, had been ruled out. With no one dual-purpose body variant, they should've been planning on having both roadster & coupe versions, yeah?

It was actually rumored as one of the engines being tested on the early M Roadster spy pics. Now that a turbo will debut with the 3 series, I'm confident we'll see other turbos appearing on the street and on the racecourse.

Rumor has it that BMW M will be coming out with LOTS of upgrades for this car...including super/turbo charging, full coil over suspensions, track wheels larger brakes and areo kits....it is just still a rumor.

...From below (and I can conceed that) but it is entirely possible to install that V8 from the top. There's clearly enough room to accomodate a v-shaped engine in that bay.

Mark my word. The V8 engine WILL be in the MZ4 Coupe in 2 years.

by Hartge, Z4 5.0i (http://www.hartge.de/html/z4uk.html), on a specialty/tuner basis, it's still unclear as to whether BMW MC can do it.

Maybe they're waiting 'til after the E92-93 gets it. Or, maybe they're waiting, in approx. two years time, when the new platform is expected, so they can install it from below. iDunno. <font color= white>

Corvette, and best of Porsche and M-B. But I won't be buying one, can't afford M6 / Z8 prices.

I might drop down to new?? lightweight M2 based on 1 series, 4 cylinder turbo charged screamer.

I have the time to imagine -- still waiting for replacement fuel pump from BMW NA .
