Earlier today, BMW AG/BMW M GmbH released the official specs & pics of the new V8 that will go into the E92 M3. It puts out 420 PS, and weighs ~15kg less than the S54.

For more info, go to: "More in Every Respect: The new V8 Power Unit for the BMW M3 (Long Version)" (http://forums.roadfly.com/forums/bmw/bmw_m3_e90_e92/8321428-1.html)

See also Charlie R.'s posting (http://forums.roadfly.com/forums/bmw/bmw_m3_e90_e92/8321349-1.html), which includes the output graphs.

As to whether BMW will offer the V8 in the E86 M Coupe, or wait until the next-gen E89, is yet to be determined. However, for a possible answer, or good timing if nothing else, see the (excellent, IMO) interview with BMW NA's ///M Brand Manger, Martin Birkmann, for the current issue of <i>Bimmer</i>:

I leased so if so, great, I'll have a V8 coupe in about 2 years. Bought god help the owners if they do! The value will go ... kerplunk. I mean, if the new motor were heavier - no competition, I'll take an S54 - but since it's actually LIGHTER, GIMMIE!!!

The grapevine says that putting the new V8 in the Z4 isn't possible in the current configuration of the Spartenburg assembly line. (one engine goes in from above, and the other would need to be raised up from below) And it is unlikely they would re-arrange the assembly line for that engine.

I have no first-hand knowledge, this is from a discussion overheard between a BMW Club member and a BMW employee (while we were standing in the parking lot of the 'Ring).

... just finished reading the Bimmer magazine article... He pretty much said it would be there if the engine and the car were being produced at the same time.

I stand corrected.

Or maybe I stand confused.

I think I'll go sit down.

Sorry for any confusion. While posting I'd forgotten about the issue that engines have to be installed from below and that BMW MC found it effectively impossible to do.

But, IIRC, that was before Spartanburg was switched to One Line instead of two. I kinda doubt that would make any difference, but I really don't know.

Would the fact that it's a ///M engine justify the extra expense, assuming it's even feasible?

Yet Birkmann's answer seemed positive - He didn't say which Z4, tho. <font color= white>

Oooh. Now that's a V8 every red-blooded gear head can appreciate. Thanks for the post.

I do hope it will find its way into the Mcoupe. If it does, then I'm at the dealer.

Two other wish list things will help make me buyer:
+ the concept Z4coupe wheels (a very cool modern take on wire wheels)
+ better location for the battery (looks like between the mufflers is not an option with the V8 pipes as shown in the article)

I bought my M Coupe in May of 1999. A few months later, details of the new (E46) M3 came out. I asked my dealer if it was likely that the M Coupe would get the new engine. He told me that they absolutely wouldn't put the new engine in the M Coupe. You all know how that went.

I still have my '00 M Coupe. It still looks brand new.

I'd love to buy the new M Coupe, but I'm not going to be a sucker again. Just as sure as I go plunk down my money, they'll come out with a V8 M Coupe and also offer SMG on it just to make me really mad.

I hope they DO put that V8 in there. Sure will make the price drop on the 6s and I'll be waiting to scoop one up! yippee

Hopefully they will leave out the SMG gearbox...
