Someone might know on the message board of www.firstfives.org. Good luck. I recently took mine off, its on the drop pipe, but haven't put it back on. From removing it, it looked as though it was connected electrically after it was installed.
First trick is get a generic one-wire sensor from local auto parts place. It will likely be Bosch, and much cheaper than the same sensor from BMW. The lead will probably be short, so splice the original lead to it. That's probably why yours looked wired in place.
Other than that, no trick at all.
