Hello E30 guys. I just wanted to pick at your brains for an answer to a question I have. It seem that a lot of the new cars coming out are small displacement high revving type motors. I've heard people give them praise for having such a high horsepower per liter ratio. But i've also heard people saying that you gotta rev up to 7k or even 8k to get the high horsepower these cars promise. And that they wouldn't do good on a track because the sweet spot in the power band is so high you'd have trouble keeping it there. I've heard that the e30 M3 you have to kinda do the same, Keep the revs up to keep it in the powerband. So i thought you guys might provide some insight on this topic for me. Would these cars that have to rev up to 8k to max hp do good on a track. Would you ever really see the power these cars say they have. And is it hard keeping the revs up so you have power on tap.

One of the answers: gearing (transmission gear ratio & rear differential).
My e30 m3 revs to 8000rpm or 7800. I got my car dynoed and it actually loses power when i hit the over 7500rpm. the powerband is from 4000 till 7500. below that, it is pretty dead.

Hi Franklin
Thanks for sharing your dyno result.
I think the new 7800 rev limit (stock rev was 7250 rpm?) helps the 1st to 2nd gear shift, which will put 2nd gear at 4000 rpm (which is in the powerband range). Note: I am talking about U.S. E30M3 transmission gear ratio.
