If by left, you meant the front of the engine, that is where the return from your valve cover breather returns, after the anti-polution system. I do not recall mine (160,000 miles) as being that dirty.

...change it? Worn cams and sludge are signs of neglect.

Sorry, Adam. I don't have any advice for you. Here's my own plea for long-distance diagnostics...
Here's a link to some pics I took of my plugs, cap, and rotor. I'm wondering if anything in there might give a clue as to why my car is running like crap. If anyone out there with experience could please take a look at the pics and read through my description, I'd really appreciate it.
http://www.bayareamotorsport.com/~jon/pics/ignition
My car was running alright but a quite a bit rich. I tested the AFM and the resistance jumped all over so I replaced it. The new one changes much more smoothly. But now I've got all kind of problems. Here's what happens, in chronological order:
1. Start up: idles very low...very rough. Exhaust smells really rich. Holding the throttle down a bit brings the idle up after a few seconds.
2. Sitting in neutral...engine doesn't want to rev over 2000 rpm...hesitates around 2000 then surges upward. Almost impossible to drive at this point.
3. A couple of minutes later...the coolant temp needle just moved up a little. Now it idles better and runs fine. The idle does vary a bit though between 800 and 1000, staying at one rpm for a few seconds to a few minutes.
4. Driving...now and when completely warm, any significant engine load around 3500-4500 rpm causes detonation. :(
5. Pull up to a stoplight...low rough idle for a second and then it moves up higher and smooths out. I can smell the rich-smelling exhaust with my window down.
Other things I know: Coolant temp sensor is fine. WOT/Idle switch is fine. In-tank fuel pump is new. I don't think there are any vacuum leaks...I checked extensively with propane. Plug wires and coil look original (90K miles).
Please let me know if you have any advice about what my problem(s) might be or what else to check. Short of replacing all fuel and ignition components, I don't know what to do. It seems like the DME is really confused or something...rich sometimes...detonation others. HELP PLEASE!
THANKS A LOT,
Jon Thelen

I did run into a low oil pressure senarion about 3 months ago where the return pipe from the head was not set correctly. Besides that I have every record of 3-4k intervels of oilchanges. Do you have any ideas of how to clean that sludge out?
