Grille procedure from the nicest grill I've seen yet
thanks for the compliment on the grilles, here is how I did it:
I removed all three grilles and the little silver metal rings that surround the headlights. I sanded them all down with 220 grit I think. Then I wiped them clean and sprayed them with Rust-Oleum Satin Black paint. On the can it says Satin Black 7777 as the paint code. I just picked it up at the local hardware store. It took me two tries to find a good color match with the paint, I tried flat black first but I didn't like the way it looked. I painted all three grilles so that they would all be the exact same color, I didn't want any differences. I also painted those metal rings that hold the headlights in place because I noticed after I originally painted the grilles that those rings looked funny. So I actually painted those rings after everything else. But I like the way it turned out. It does look better to me than most, I think that metal ring is the detail that counts. Plus I like my M3 badge painted the way it is. I think that is kind of unique. I hope that helps.
I think I put about 3-4 coats of paint on about 4 months ago. No sign of paint fade yet or anything like that. Good luck

like there should be something there. Anyway the chromed kidney grille is a BMW trademark in itself and I wouldn't want to detract from the marque ;^)
It's an opinion - everyone has their own...
~B

and do u intend to use it?
your car looks fantastic as it is, dont fit the black one ;) (IMO anyway, i dont like painted kidneys)

I have a extra chrome kidney grill. exactly, its part of what makes a BMW visually a BMW. Of course its an opinion, but picture black kidneys on Anthony`s white car (see his pic) - It will look ****e! If anything, on a red or black car but I hate the black kidney look, period.
Hmm, about the grill emblem. Yes, I paid 26ukpounds for a new ///M3 grill emblem and six months later its scratched to fu**. already! 8-(

like there should be something there. 1) There is no other chrome on the M3 so I think a black grill matches blk trim well. Black wouldn't go with other models.
2) Makes people take a better look to figure out what it is at first glance.
3) It's very subtle and not quite 'ricey'. If they were originally black and people were chroming them just imagine the flames - LOL.
4) This isn't a 'typical' BMW and I think the original chrome says "look at me, I'm a BMW!" just a little. Which isn't my style...
With all that said, I'd leave it chrome if everyone else was going to black, just to be a bit different!! Just my thoughts on the subject..

There is a definite kidney grille there since everything around it is red. If you have black on black on black, there is no kidney form.
I don't really care. I'm just saying it's not the same thing.
Of course, if you had a black Z1, M1, 8-series, etc....
-Jon

they used painted grilled on certain models too

BMW's symbol. Not really as they changed it from time to time. The grille is black so if the kidney is black then it kind a dissapeaers into the grille. This should stand out a little bit. If you want to paint it, paint to the same color as a car. That makes more sense then just plain black. I think...
Besides the 8 series has chrome kindey too !!! I had to look at twice I would have sworn too, but no, there is a small ring around it.

they paint them that way is so the pit boxes can tell which car is approaching. Teams with several cars will add these funky painted bits. I can't see that on a road car ...that's for sure!
Chris
