I was recently driving my 735i when the transmission program light came on and the car would not shift into the 4th gear, also the mode indicator light the one that shows E,S or M just went off. I pulled over put the car in Park and shut it off. I then started the car again and the light went off and the car drove normally. Any ideas what the heck is going on?

The same thing happened to my 1994 740i about a month ago. I did the same thing, pulled over turned off the car, then restarted it. I had the car in for an alignment and talked to the mechanic about the "transmission program" message. He said that whenever there is that type of error the transmission goes into a fail safe mode (mine stayed in third gear). He read the error code and told me that it was bad information sent to the transmission. He went on to say that there were two sensors that could have caused the problem, I don't remember the names of the them only that one cost $400 and the other was about $90. Finally, he said don't worry about it unless it becomes cronic.
: I was recently driving my 735i when the transmission program light came on and the car would not shift into the 4th gear, also the mode indicator light the one that shows E,S or M just went off. Sometimes the software gets scrambled so my BMW specialist told me.
