Good and bad news, for all those who are going to buy a 328i, E46 generation, very good news...with the second release of the BMW X5 (that is the six cylinder version, after the initial launch of the eight cylinder, BMW will replace the 328i engine with the same X5 six cylinder engine. The new six cylinder will reportedly be a 3.0 Liter engine, producing approximately 225 bhp. The new 328 or soon to be 330, will NOT be affected by any price markup and will be priced in the 328 price region.
Sorry for the bad news current E46 328 owners...evolution can be tough sometimes...

So do you have any dates when this will actually happen? Do you have a reputable source that can confirm this schedule? I think we've all been in agreement that this will happen, the question has been WHEN!! IT could be as easy to say that it won't happen for a year after the second generation X5 because they will take up most of the supply of the 3.0l engine. Or because the X5 is produced in the States while the E46 is produced in Germany they may be on totally different schedules. The key is to remember this is all speculation until something official comes from BMW!!!

: Good and bad news, for all those who are going to buy a 328i, E46 generation, very good news...with the second release of the BMW X5 (that is the six cylinder version, after the initial launch of the eight cylinder, BMW will replace the 328i engine with the same X5 six cylinder engine. Think about it: BMW will not offer the 3.0 until at least 2001 MY. Reason: The 328 just got a thorough going over with the addition of double VANOS. Smog certification is expensive. Therefore, they're going to get at least two years out of the e46 328 before moving up to the 330. Otherwise resale value of the new e46/current 328 would be severely impacted.
This ain't Oldsmobile...

Yes, you may not like the A4, but if the
328/330 starts pushing high 30's it will
be competing against the S4--a pretty nice
car. Also, BMW has its own problems keeping
the 323 from eating 328 sales. The update to
330 aims to justify the 4k price spread, which
20 random horsepower just doesn't do. Kicking
up the price seems like it may aggravate the
problem. Also not sure if that leaves room
for an M3 at reasonable expense. Finally,
the lexus is200 will be entering
the market at that time at a price projected
around 33.5k.

If you're a current 328i owner, who cares. If they kept the car the same would you be any better off?

for those of us on the cusp of getting a new 328, it's kind of important. I would not want to get the car only to have them increase power by 30hp a short time later.
: If you're a current 328i owner, who cares. If they kept the car the same would you be any better off?

I couldn't agree more. I was addressing the implication that this makes those folks that currently enjoying the already incredible 328 E46 somehow worse off.
: for those of us on the cusp of getting a new 328, it's kind of important.
