My '90 535i(m) has over 183K miles and is still going strong. Only real problem I've had was a failed water pump at 165K which led to an overheat which warped the head. All fixed now with no further problems. Best car I ever had.

Have noticed that there isn't much discussion about this year and series as other people have said this is one of the most reliable cars BMW has made (not many problems to talk about). Consumer reports even puts this car and later E-34's on their most reliable list...amazing for a BMW!.

I've never had any real problems at all.
I've owned this 10 year old car for 7 years, (bought 1/92 with 28k for $23,000) of its life and love it, despite a few annoyances.
The mileage is approx. 90k because the odometer stopped counting a few years back at 53999 - I try and keep close track of the mileage though. The dash displays are erratic due to a bad motherboard. The driveshaft and torque converter were both replaced under warranty in attemp to eliminate a severe vibration. The front door panels delaminated and I got some help from BMW NA in replacing. Finally the water pump failed about 2 years ago.
Despite these problems, the car is still extremely tight, reliable, and comfortably fast!

135k original exhaust. Water pump at about 120k. Control arm bushings (these wear out by 25k according to my technician), shocks/springs at 100k best money I ever spent ! Most reliable car I've ever owned. I've never even done the brakes in 50k of driving ! Much more reliable than the E28& audi quattro it replaced.

I'll hit 200,000 on my '89 535 this week. Hate to say it, but my '77 300D with 185,000 will easily outlast the Bimmer. I have all the problems I've seen listed in previous messages, but it's always cheaper to keep fixing than shell out $50,000. Next car: Mercedes again.
: I'm interested in longevity for this model. Problems include -- sagging headliner in rear behind sunroof, will cost 275 USD to fix; drivers door lock failed, cost approx $400 for dealer to replace; other than that, nothing except routine maintenance.
No major problems, it's been a great car...replaced the usual stuff, muffler, brakes, and all engine compartment hoses/lines. Had to have the lighting control module repaired, and just recently did the oil pan gasket. I plan to drive it to 200K, probably be around 2004, then look for a nice used '97-'98 e39, the new ones cost too much :^)

I have a 90 525i, and have 249k on her. Only problem was the famous m20 head crack, and of course the front end bushings. Will be installing 3.5ltr mtr this summer, and keep those bimmers running strong.

Seems to me it would be a small nightmare with the different radiator, battery relocation, etc, etc? Let us know how it goes--

I do my own maint and change the fluids approximately every 5-7K with hyw miles. I'm thinking about a 91 M5 purchase.... Any comments?
