The M3 may launch harder than any other BMW due to the trick rear diff and gearing.
But the Z8 has the best power to weight ratio, and both it and the M5 will eventually pull away from the M3.
On a road course, things get a lot more interesting...
I wwould guess that to the speed limiter (155), the M3 and M5 would reach there together (the M3 faster at lower speeds), and the Z8 a little bit quicker than both. But compare MSRPs: M3 - 45K, M5 -70K, Z8 -128K. End O' story.

where do you get your information from magazines? please the Z8 would KILL and M3 the M5 would also KILL the M3 over 60mph..and the Z8 launches a lot faster than the M3. As it should for the $.

I don't remember the 1/4 times of the top of my head but they should probably scale about the same way (same HP to weight ratio for all three cars ?).
A few percent is my definition of a 'little'. You'd notice it but only while drag racing the car with identical drivers. And we haven't talked about a road course, either.
I suggest we should all check the Nurembring (sp?) performance numbers that we're posted here months back. I would use those numbers to assess the relative performance of these cars in a real world - race course with curves and pro drivers.
I agree, and have seen similar numbers from a variety of testers.
By 60 mph, the Z8 is a tenth or so ahead of the M3.
I suspect if we get 0-30 mph or 0-20 mph times, we'll find that the M3 is getting a slightly better launch due to better traction on it's rear differential compared to the Z8, which then passes the M3 based on higher HP to weight.
Now it's time for Alex to proclaim that 0.1 second is a HUGE difference and that the Z8 _kills_ the M3 on 0-60... Kids. Gotta love them.
Oh, and before people start yelling that the Z8 will launch harder than the M3 due to better HP to weight or Torque to weight, remember - all these cars can spin their wheels in 1st gear. They can't get their entire load of torque to the road regardless if it's 262 ft-lbs or 368 ft-lbs.
So the car with a better traction/weight ratio wins the launch.
