M5 LITE

I have the factory 17" 7-spoke wheels on my '97 540i/6. I would like to upgrade the size and style of the wheels. What is the maximum width of tire that I can use w/ 18" wheels? I don't know of the offset needed. I will be keeping my stock brakes (although 13.5" Movit's may come in the near future). Since the M5 uses P245/40ZR18 and P275/35ZR18, I was thinking that I could do the same if not P285/35ZR18 in the back. What width wheels would I need and would I need to roll or flare the fenders any?

The M5 setup is the largest that will fit on your car. You will need to roll the fenders to fit those tires on the rear. BMW did this at the factory on the M5. The 285/35R18 would be the wrong height tire even if it did fit. You need to keep the same diameter tire front and rear on the car to keep the ABS and traction control correct. If you have any other questions let me know. Jim at 800-428-8355 ext 364
