Just got the latest word on the roll hoops from Scott at Quality who passed along what BMW NA told him.
For cars in the vin range listed on the roll hoop catalog page, the upgrade will only work on cars with either no subwoofer or with the Harmon Kardon subwoofer (as Walter has been telling us). The Nokia subwoofer will not work. It is prohibitively expensive to try to order the Harmon Kardon subwoofer by itself.
If you have the HK subwoofer you need two extra brackets and a different box which costs something over $300. The complete part list and QI prices are listed on the roll hoop upgrade catalog page.

--Alan

If so, you have the HK subwoofer.
If you bought the subwoofer upgrade after you bought your car and installed it yourself, you probably have the Nokia.

--Alan

it cost (97 models) $675.00. This option, if purchased/ordered will be so noted on your vehicle window sticker.. The HK Upgrade includes extra speakers (total of 10 including subwoofer) and an upgraded amplifier. The head unit, tuner/tape/preamp is the same as that supplied on all vehicles. I believe that it is manufactured for BMW by Alpine. I may be wrong on this.
: How can I tell which subwoofer I have, the Harmon kardon or the Nokia subwoofer?. Gotta know, want to upgrade. So, if you have the HK Stereo the price of the rollhoops basically just doubled. :(

This information from Quality is old and out of date. According to BMWNA, the box is not available. You can order, Quality can bill it, but BMWNA cannot deliver it.
I have taken my 2.8 with HK apart and started the installation. Hopefully tomorrow I will find out if the current box can be modified.

: Just got the latest word on the roll hoops from Scott at Quality who passed along what BMW NA told him.
: For cars in the vin range listed on the roll hoop catalog page, the upgrade will only work on cars with either no subwoofer or with the Harmon Kardon subwoofer (as Walter has been telling us).
