I just saw this over on the Z3 board. A company in Germany makes replacement door panels for the E30, E36, and E46 3-series, E39 5-series, and the Z3. In my opinion, the designs are not too obtrusive and could make it fairly easy to add room for more speakers in a sound system. A big benefit that I see is that people who want to do a serious sound system upgrade could use these replacement door panels to add the speakers, which preserves their original panels from being hacked up so that they can be put back on to make the car stock when it is time to sell it.

Go to their web page at and click on "doorpanels/doorboards" and then on "BMW".
