No dipstick?, no service schedule, is this really sealed for life, how longs that?

Can anyone explain this, and offer advice on how to extend it's expected life span. We can change engine oil every 5K miles but whats the point if the gearbox blows up etc.

Yes, it is a "lifetime" fluid. No, there is no dipstick. No, they do not offer a lifetime warranty. :)

I've yet to hear of a BMW tranny fail now that they run lifetime (ATF-LT) fluid although it's only been something like the last 7 years. I believe Jag uses ZF trannies like BMW (BMW also uses some GM units), and if they are similar than you do not want anything bvut the exact same fluid in it or you will start to have weird performasnce issues.

So ... if you want to drain and refill the tranny, I suggest you use OE fluid only and have it flushed by a knowledgable technician. Furthermore, if you wait too long (opinions vary, but over 100,000 miles is too long) then changing fluid can do more harm than good as old hardened gunk is dislodged and can clog valvebodies. A good BMW-certified tech will refuse to change the ATF in an older transmission out of fear of doing more harm than good.

Comming up on 60K, just had Jag 60K service coolant change etc.

I'm only doing about 12K a year so I think I will leave well alone based on your advice .

thanks

PS might think about changing oil every 5K as mixed motoring with many trips of 8 miles in traffic, with only occasioanl long hauls of 350 miles at speeds of 60-100 mph

If you choose to change your tranny fluid I have only found it available here: <a href="http://www.jie.com/oilref.htm">http://www.jie.com/oilref.htm</a><br>
Thanks,
