word from multiple sources is that BMW will recall all delivered M3s that were filled w/ 5W-30 in the factory, and carry that designation on the oil label, and replace the oil w/ 10W-60 (both Castrol synthetic). My shop foreman said this is the case, but no ppaerwork ordering it yet. No word on the reason -- there's speculation it has to do with mainaining protection under high load/high temperature conditions.

I wonder if this may be the reason so many people seem to be burning oil. Maybe when hot the oil isn't thick enough.
