Guys,

I am banging my head against the wall trying to decide on a color ts/black, topaz/black or estoril/black. My dealer says he can do the special order...do you think it is worth doing? Also, any idea on cost?

Thanks,

scott

The best color values in the blue region for the M3 are Topaz, and Carbon Black (if it appeals to you). Nice colors, and just the usual metallic paint charge.

For special order, my obvious vote (since it's what I did) is Avus Blue. Estoril is also nice. These are expensive. If you are unsure of which you like best, I'd have to suggest you go with Topaz or Carbon since it will save you money and time (special order delays your car about 3 weeks).

Only you can decide what color you like. My opinion is the best blues are Avus and Topaz. Estoril is too cutesy in my opinion and Leguna Seca is ...well... not for me.

We've got three of us or so with Avus cars on order for the US.

I think the first one is due in a matter of a week or so, and be assured there will be tons of pictures. Watch here for them.

Meanwhile, you can look at these older 3 series with the Avus paint on them to get the concept. Avus is medium metallic sapphire blue, in the general style of LeMans - more pure blue than Topaz which has grey and torquise undertones in it, but is otherwise somewhat simila. Estoril is a much lighter metallic blue than Avusr:

.. I think it looks a little washed out. Might just be the photos. EB looks better on E36 or E39 5-series. If I was going to shell out $2K for paint I'd go for Avus. Try to see EB in person - you might be an individual order on a regular E46 coupe.

Cheers,
Frank.

I dont regret getting it, in fact am glad I did.. the other colour I considered was Velvet blue which is gorgeous!

Estoril is lighter than Avus, whereas Avus is a richer and deeper blue. Velvet is on the purple side. I've seen Velvet in person, not on a BMW, but on a BMW Individual paint swatch. They should have called it Velvet purple, not Velvet Blue. Pictures of Velvet are not representative of the real color...

Used a different flash here, and looks a bit blue, but it does compare well... and excuse the british weather.

showed me in the showroom and said it was Avus.. because Avus was an M3 specific colour at one time.. so I take that back.. Avus IS nice.. and the one I saw.. well no idea what that was then.

like the Euro 19s? SAF

My wife and I have a 2001 S4 avant with a special order color (achet grey) I had posted on Audiworld about trying to get it and low and behold I got a call from AoA (they monitor the board). It cost me 1800 smacks...but here is the rub...somebody tagged by bumper and I wanted to get it repainted...took close to 3 weeks to get the paint from the factory. The paint code was not recognizeable because it was not available in the US. Go figure....I would imagine that it is the only one in the US :)

Perhaps you were looking at Laguna Seca Blue, sometimes called Smurf Blue around here. It can look a very pale torquise in certain flourescent lighting, though it goes blue M&M in sunlight.

Estoril is a very nice medium metallic blue, while Avus is close kin of LeMans blue, and a distant cousin of Topaz - a darker sapphire metallic blue, nothing one would ever call "pale".

I love them.. I had ACS 18s on my previous M3 and they were dreadfulon our roads, looked nice though. I think the upgraded suspension makes these wheels much more bearable than before. The roads in the UK are really crap in places, so if i compare driving these to my previous, then the ride is better. I have not really driven a new M3 with 18s yet for any length of time to compare it with.. but I am not disappointed with them.. and to me at least, the ride doesnt seem bad at all.. i love them.

Standard blues on 325's would include Topaz, Steel Blue, and Orient Blue. Of the three, only steel blue would match your "pale" description...
