I have the opportunity to buy a 1979 SC, 100k miles, that needs a transmission rebuild. how much is a real-world bill for this? what else is changed when this gets done? I'm not doing any of the labor myself.

I lost my transaxle at an auto x, missed a shift... anyway, I purchased a good low mile used one for $900.

An SC trans repair or rebuild will probably run between $800 & $1,400
at an independent shop.
Generally they need a couple of "dog teeth" and syncro rings, not knowing the problems you're experiencing it's hard to give you much more of an answer.
Feel free to call if you would like to discuss it more.
