Reverse is up and to the left where 1st would normally be. On mine I have to push down/in on the shifter and then up to the left.

With reverse being on the upper left, 1st is down below it....
then comes 2nd, 3rd, 4th,......... and 5th???
does it have a 5th gear??

1st through 4th are in the standard H, (1st in upper left, 4th in lower right) Reverse is the only unusual one, Jay's right, you have to push in (down) the gear shift to find it. Some 912s had a five speed, most did not.
