It only works with kenwood heads. Phatnoise is the designed of the box that Kenwood has OEM'ed - check out

specifically for the M3 or do you have to buy it elsewhere. Do you need a special connector?

Phatnoize sells a box for the E46 3'ers; remember the audio is the same. It does integrate with the stock head unit (and steering controls) althoough I heard they are still working out a few bugs.

Phatnoise is no longer selling boxes to anyone.. kenwood bought the rights from them..

It works great, I have 02 M3 coupe with Nav, got the 20 GB Phatbox with the BMW connector. You may want to find out if you can still order the BMW connector from Phatbox (which is made to connect directly to the CD prewiring in your trunk). I mounted it above the nav CDROM where the CD changer would go. I'll post pictures if anyone is interested.

Well, if I were a small company that created a good product with lots of potential, and a very large firm wanted to 'purchase' the rights...

i'd be all for it...that's what the industry is about.. just sux for us that Kenwood only wants to use it with their headunits.

Just a matter of time before other companies create similar products and to compete they'll make them more compatible.
