I was at the local (Alaska) BMW dealer test-driving an X5 today and I mentioned to the sales lady that I was thinking of trading my M3 in before the engine fails. She told me that they've already had an engine failure on an SMG M3 this year. The car only had 800 miles on it, too. She suspects it was "driver abuse" because they guy has a 5-point harness on his seats. It was delivered in January '02, just like my M3. So it would have been built during the dreaded Oct-Dec time period.

Sooooo, there were 4 M3's in the entire state of Alaska. This gives the car a 25% failure rate up here. My car was built in December '01, so we'll see if it makes it to 50% in the future. She told me one of the other 4 M3's was stolen because some dummy left his car running in front of his house. It was completely trashed and they crashed it into a tree.

I want to wait for them to sign off on it being bearings and needing a new engine before I join the esteemed "list". Should happen tomorrow.
