About a week ago my SMG was acting funny. I got up in the morning, went to start the car (it was about 50 degrees F in the garage) and I couldn't get the car into neutral. I had to cycle through turning th key on many times before I could get it to go into neutral. Once I got it started I had to go through many more cycles before I could get it into gear. The Service warning light and the SMG "!" light came on. I directly went to the BMW service station (BMW of San Francisco). I had this problem once before but when I got the dealer everything was working fine and the lights had went off so they said it was nothing. After they looked at the problem they finally decided that they problem was the hydrologics in the SMG. They had to order parts - total time looks to be about 7 business days. Anyone else had this problem. The car was purchased new in 9/2002, has about 4800 miles on it.

On at least some cars, it's not too hard to confuse the SMG gearbox to the point where it is very hard to get it to grab neutral in order to start the car.

Most often, you get stuck by a sequence of stepping on the brake and/or flipping the gearbox in or out of 0 while the engine is off. This leaves the SMG "confused", and it's cranky when you try and start it - won't give you 0.

Most common cure is either to just let it sit for a while, and repeat your normal startup process, _or_ in some cases stamping extra hard on the brake pedal will cure the blockage.

That said, anything which lights the SMG (!) is a problem with the system, and likely not part of the above story...

other than that, no issues. To cure the lockup, I pulled over, shut off and restarted and SMG was fine.<br><A HREF="http://members.roadfly.com/jrw/Front View.jpg"><IMG SRC="http://members.roadfly.com/jrw/Front View.jpg">
