They fixed it today by replacing some o-rings, gasket, and bolt.

Did anyone else have this problem? If so, was it fixed?

in my M3. At first I thought it was spilled oil. Dealer said it was just cosmoline burning off. Ha! But it slowly got worse. After about two months they looked at it and decided it was leaking.

Since VANOS gaskets are not sold separetly, a whole new VANOS unit was ordered. It took a couple of weeks to get the unit in. Then another week to get on the service schedule. Then it took two days to do the work. But, it all worked out in the end -- no more oil leak.

I mentioned that some other M3 had the leak but they said it was leaking at the cylinder head near the thermostat. I guess we will see if that fixed it.

i would say that the adjuster/bolt holding the timing chain tensioner, located under the thermostat housing, had backed out and was leaking down the inside of the engine
