the display dims in and out, parts of numbers show up, others are dimmed or don't show at all - just stupid stuff..

has anyone had this problem / any ideas ? gonna call the service dude soon

Mine did something similar after I nicked a ircuit installing my concealed V1 display. Maybe the clip holding the multifunction display in place is just loose.

As said, it is a problem with the instrument cluster.

I still have my X5 (While stilllll waiting for M3 @ status 193) and this has happened 3 time over the last 2 years. BMW is aware of this and will replace the cluster each time without a problem.

Do not even give them a hint that it might be something you did.

The clip holding the LCD display inside is loose. Dealer is too dumb to fix. They will just replace it for you. No big deal
