It was about mid afternoon and I was getting on the I-15 heading towards Vegas, when I spotted a pre-2002 Carrera(hard top). He stayed on my A$$ for a few miles so I got the hint. When traffic began to clear we had a run from 85-140. I had to start directly behind the 996 because an ambitious WRX pulled up next to us and got involved in the race. The second the Porsche and I mashed it I was eating his bumper and had to take my foot off the gas pedal for a second. By then the WRX was a few car lengths back so I switched lanes and easily passed the 996. The look on the passenger's face was priceless. He looked in shock as he said "holy [Oops!]". I kept pulling until about 140 when I called it off. By then I was 3 car lengths ahead of the Porsche; and WRX was in another time zone trying desperately to save face. Considering I started behind, changed lanes twice, and took my foot off the gas for a spilt second, I was in shock at how my M3 handled its business.

140 on the highway with some traffic? Hmmmm.

that sounds right. do you have a coupe or convertible?

you said pre2002 so you probably already knew you were up against the 300hp 3.4l engine as opposed to the 318hp? 3.6l engine sold today which is probably just a hair faster than the m3.

Porsche manuals are significantly quicker - any tip driver who says different is lying. Boxster 2.7 with a manual runs with a tiptronic 'S'.

It is only 3.4 ltr engine with Variocam not Variocam Plus. Not that all of this would make that much of a difference, but still might explain you suprise in beating him :)

even Porsche new that - that's why the new one makes more power. '03 911, different story - plus 911s don't have a limiter, so they will leave you on top if they want to.

taking it easy i was able to hold off my friend's 996. well, not taking it easy, but i let the wheels spin at launch... peeling out between 4-5k... shifted early into 2nd at around 7000 rpm, felt the tail slide sideways slightly (more wheelspin). and then through 2nd, 3rd, and into 4th we were pretty much dead even, up to about 100. we stopped around there and i definitely knew i hadn't lost by any means.

basically... i was pretty casually able to keep up with my friend's 996 (it's a '99). i felt i could have been quicker. i'm sure he was going pretty hard too... he's a skilled driver... and i had much less experience in my car at the time.

maybe there's a big difference, maybe not... but i felt comfortable in that race.

0-60MPH NOT 0-100kph=(62mph) yes, those 2mph make a significant time difference.
'02>911 C2 Man: 4.6-4.7secs
911 Turbo Auto: 4.3secs
911 Turbo Man: 3.9secs
911 GT2 Man: 3.6secs

Only production car(not limited either)being made currently that can compete with the GT2 is the Lambo Murcielago(3.6secs to 60)...correct me if i'm wrong anyone.

1999-01 996s -- The M3 wins
2002-03 996s -- The machines are dead even, the driver factor is back.

I have driven (hard) a '99, '01, and an '02 (recently) so I can talk from experience. Forget those magazine huggers ...

The pre-1999 911s are called 993s. They are a different story. I owned a '96 and drove a Turbo -- the Turbo will make you look like you are standing still while at WOT.

is faster than the E46 M3......MAB

Because even the 300 hp 6-speed 996's are *very* fast up high. Here's the acceleration/track data for both from Auto Motor & Sport.
