I have an old Sony Vaio 205 PC that came with an OEM Win98 on some system recovery CD's. I cannot find the CD's and I want to reinstall Win98 (from a fresh format of the HD). Is there some way I can extract the CAB files on the C: drive and rebuild a CD-R that can install Win98 on this machine. I can send the CAB file over my home network to my other machine to burn the CD.

TIA

The Sony Hardware will not support 2000/NT/XP OS.

You need the original media of Win 98 in order to reinstall. Grabbing the files of your C: drive will not work. There are programs like Kaaza to help you find what your looking for.

I'm trying to make this work today. I have one piece of software that I use at work that doesn't run on my XP machine (it's available for XP, company's too cheap to buy it). It's the client piece of the ODBC software for the AS/400 at the office and it's necessary to run the screen-scraper EDI app we use. So I was trying to get this Win98 up and running while I'm iced in. I've cleaned up the registry a little bit and I think I can make do with the current install, now I have it working again. I'm installing my non-xp software right now and I'll see if it works. It's currently locked up during the install, but I give it another few minuted before I cancel it.

Now if I just had an extra NIC card here at the house I could use the VPN instead of Dialup (or try to copy the Cabs over to this PC)...maybe I'll go to CompUSA later (it's closer to home by about 12 miles then my office).

recovery floppy you can download. FYI, normally Win98 doesn't install the Win98 cab files onto the hard drive unless you specifically copy them from the CD to the hard drive. I would imagine the Sony recovery system either put the cab files on the hard drive or on the recovery CD.
The only downloads I can find for my PC are updated drivers, no OS, no original drivers or apps.
For Sale: 2001 M3 Coupe (see link for more info)

All the software is installed and I think it will get me thru the day...until I can get back to the office and collect a copy of 98, a NIC card and a KVM.
