It's done by fuel consumption. You get an official oil change on the service indicator about every ~650 gallons of fuel used. Depending on your driving style, that's anywhere from 15k miles down to 11k or less if you really stand on it all the time.

Some of us change it twice as often, and there is a special clause which says you get fresh oil once a year no matter what the miles are.

Make sure to check the oil when you pick it up. I reminded them that it takes 6.5 quarts, and got the yea yea response.

So when I picked it up I asked why there was only 6 quarts listed on the service ticket. The “technician” looked at me like I was the idiot, assured me that he personally put 6.5 in and was told they don’t bill half quarts.

My response was lets check it and see, so we pulled the dipstick after they brought the car out and what a surprise it was about a half quart low.

To that I was told it is within spec, but to make you happy we will top it off for you.

Maybe if BMWNA can’t teach their “technicians” what a half is, then they should just change the motor to take a full 7 quarts
