I hope BMW comes out with an "onroad package", meaning no body cladding/a fully painted exterior, dropped ride height (no more than 4 or 5 inches of ground clearance), and an SMG transmission. The SMG we might see, since it's already on the Z4 with the X3's engines, it wouldn't be too expensive to put in, but I hope they bring the other options over here as well. Oh yeah, if the X3 is equipped with skidplates or anything else that would be needed for off roading, the onroad package would of course have those removed. Any other ideas for options/option packages?

I'd love to see a diesel with a plastic interior you can hose down (zinc lined drain holes in the floor), 15"/16" rims with big gnarly tires, a ride height option to jack it up, extra fog and drive lights. It's just me. Anyone else?

BMW of late does an excellent job of offering a variety of options so if any manufacture will come up with those you mention BMW could be the one. One can order what one wants without all the fluff that comes with the fully equipped so called packages, I for one like a bare bones model with only manual trans, roof and leather and like you mention, no cladding, it's a pain.
I don't have to pay for stuff I don't want when the options are broke out in this way, when I ordered my first new BMW in 85 there
were no options but paint color and LSD, times sure change.

One problem that seems to have hit some vehicles is the dreaded, "You can't have that unless you get this" syndrome. Looking a stripped ML 350, the only option we really wanted was heated seats. If you order heated seats you have to have one of the Convenience Packages and before you can get a Convenience Package you have to get a power moonroof. Bottom line: heated seats cost at least $2,000.
