Today I put the last finishing touch on my 83 745i with Motronic. This car took a while to restore but here it is. It is not perfect look wise but the engine and tranny are perfect - 150psi compression all around, pulls 18" vacuum and tranny rebuilt by Joe Gisler. Now my 85 745i have a companion to sit with in the garage. Guess I will be looking for another one to restore, just don't tell my wife or I will have to sell one.

I just did a compression check on my '84 745, and I got 120-130 on all the cylinders. I thought that 8:1 compression would be about 15 psi (atmoshperic) times 8, or around 120. Did you bump up the compression? It looks very nice, by the way. Did you raise the rear and lower the front? I have been planning on doing this to mine, and from your pics it looks as nice as I thought it would.

John,

120 to 130 is about normal with most 150K miles and up 745s. My 85 gets 140 and it has 83K miles. Brand new engines is 155 to 160. Mine has only 35K miles on the new ported head - the PO decided to put in a new head at 100K even though there was nothing wrong with the car. He also ported and polished everything in the engine bay. The motor ran synthetic oil from new and is sparkling clean inside. With 18" of vacuum there is no leaks of any kind on the car. It is pretty much like new and gets average of 26mpg on average.
The front end is lowered via the springs and the rear is stock but the rear tires are taller. It is not my choice but it works so far and I did not want to pour more $$$ into it to restore it.

Thanks. This one took 7 months and selling an 82 745i to get it restored.

Jon,

We all know your car is better care for than others. I am always looking out for a 745i and the first thing I check is the compression to see if the car is well cared for by POs. I hope I will be able to find one that has as good a compression ratio as yours. I am now looking for an Exec model as I have never own one that has all the interior upgrades.

Jeff,

The window came that way when I bought it. It is not the first one I have that has the black out window panels.

I did not do it. The PO had dropped the front spings and use a larger rear tire to get it that way. If I have more time and money I will probably restore that as well.

I try not to name them because I usually ended up selling them after I get them restore to get another. I kept the 85 because it was my first love and it is still young at 83K miles.
Call me crazy but I am now looking for an Exec model and I will probably sell this one in order to get it unless I can talk my wife into letting me keep it. It will tough as we have 5 cars(3 Bimmers) and two drivers.

I think they call it Alpina Red instead of IAmGoingTooFastArrestMeRed. This car attracts a lot of other German cars on the highway where they will come up real close for a look. I am of course obligated to show them what a 20 year old car can do.

I thought that 120-130 was around spec? If it is only 8:1 compression, how can you get 160? 160 divided by 15 is over 10.5, wouldn't that put the CR at 10.5:1? Also, maybe I did something wrong on my compression check, I had all the plugs out and held the throttle open while cranking, did I miss something? Oh well, maybe my engine is just tired.

of other companies make such a product. Nice, but tricky to apply... Pluses are ... no sanding or metal prep other than clean well, and removable in the future if you change your mind.

Well my answer came in the form of "you can only keep one". So I just buy them, restore them, sell them, buy them, restore them, sell them.......until I can convince her that I get to keep two and then the whole process starts all over again.

For a correct "shadow line" optioned looking, I would also paint chrome on bumpers in the same color as body ....<br>

I know you have been looking for one for a while on 745i.com. Help me find a nice restorable Exec model and I will sell you this one for what I put in.
