Posted this on e46 board, but you guys would probably be even more interested:

There was an X3 driving on Route 80 around Exit 45 in New Jersey on Saturday. The roundels, badging, and certain other parts of the vehicle were covered by black tape, but it was easily recognizable as the X3. I have to say right off that this sport activity vehicle or whatever they're calling it is, in my opinion, another huge styling blunder. It's only about the size of a Rav4 and looks really whimpy. It actually reminded me of the Saturn Vue. My wife was sure it was some kind of Pontiac.

Rear lights and twin-kidney grill were dead giveaways, both very distinctive features not seen on any other vehicles. Also tape was covering the roundels and X3 badge, but you could still tell they were roundels and a badge. BMW NA headquarters in Montvale, NJ, only about a half hour's drive from where I saw this X3. They were obviously taking it out for an evaluation ride. Definetely corporate types inside. They didn't dare look over at me when I very deliberatley slowed down to have a look.

I'm not saying I'll never buy a BMW again, but I don't imagine I'll be getting a new one anytime soon. In my opinion BMW's styling has really gotten awful. It's very sad. I just hope the e46 doesn't go down as the last great BMW.

And by the way, I looked it up. The X3 is actually smaller than the Saturn Vue.
Which, in the end, is why BMW is in business. It's hard to fault them for trying to make money and sell cars people will buy. (I mean come on, look at Porsche building an SUV.) It's just that the new bimmers don't suit my tastes. I'm sure BMW will gain a new audience with cars like the X3, new 5 and new 7, and keep a good share of their current buyers. I just wish I liked these cars better, because then personal decisions about what car to buy next would be easy.
...and you've hit the nail on the head!
