...I've been told by my mechanic to stay away from Mercedes as they require 'special' tools to work on. As a DIY'er, this has always turned me away from the good ol MB diesels. I do all most of the work on all my three cars and was wondering what sort of an investment I would need to make in tools for a MB diesel (330D or 240D)

TIA!

i got the same jazz when i bought my E30 but the only special tools on the MBs are probly gear pullers and ball joint tools and the like. we both have E30s so I figure they cant be that much different than MB
Mark

kept saying that they were easy to work on, I kept saying to myself...'yeah right! that's if you have them special tools'

well, I would like to get a diesel someday. Maybe my wife wouldn't approve it, but it will be safe and I can save some money on gas (maybe that will convince her that they are worth it). Do you know what the mpg on these might be? My buddy's Golf TDI gives him ~48-50mpg! And it has kick to it too....

Cheers,

I know this isn't the board for that model, but my point is that Mercedes isn't that difficult to work on. The stuff I did was pretty easy...replacing the alternator, vacuum lines, valve cover gaskets, etc...all straight-forward and no special tools required. My dad even replaced the overhead cams in the thing.

Now, the one thing about Mercedes is that parts can be expensive, but that is true of any German car, including VW.
