My theory last week was that a lot of these accidents are caused by summer tires losing grip in cold weather. So far this accident is in line with that hypothesis.

Although he lives in the LA area, he mentioned that it was cold the night of the accident. He also had passengers in the back seat, which certainly reduced cornering power.

There was a column about summer tires in Autoweek recently, and the writer mentioned that many car makers are putting very limited-use summer tires on their performance cars in order to get good skidpad and slalom numbers in the test reports. Volvo warns owners that the standard equipment tires need to be removed for winter driving, but Audi doesn't -- which leads to shocked Audi owners who discover that their all-wheel drive cars can't get out of the driveway once the flurries start.

What I learned over the last five years with two M3s here in NJ (Michelin, Conti and now Kumho summer tires) is that the higher the cornering limits of the car/tires when the weather is hot, the bigger the handling problem when temps turn cold.

I think this guy was showing off the handling of the M3 to his friends, and was unprepared for the reduced cornering limits with people in the back seat on a cold night.<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:Charcoal'>10/01 Jet Black SMG coupe, New Jersey, exit 50B</span></p>

I find that even on a hot day my Kumhos need to get warmed up before they feel right. If the temp is under about 55 or 60 degrees F, they just don't ever get to optimum temps in normal driving. If under 45 degrees, the grip is much lower, and I can't get on the throttle coming out of a turn like I normally do. When the 37 degree warning goes off, I know to slow down and not push it.

With the stock Contis, I almost swapped ends the first time I took the car out out on cold day last winter. The temperature indicated 35 degrees, but it felt like ice when I first goosed the gas coming out of a turn. The road was absolutely dry and the day was sunny, so I was off guard. I caught the oversteer -- no harm done -- but I couldn't believe how easy it was to get very loose even with traction control on.

I take a train to work every day and my wife has a Subaru wagon, so I rarely need to drive the M3 if the weather is bad. I keep the high performance tires on the car during the winter months, but I know it's a bad idea so I try to be very sensitive to the varying grip.<p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:Charcoal'>10/01 Jet Black SMG coupe, New Jersey, exit 50B</span></p>
