in Europe that gets better than 26 mpg.

I'm not sure how it would sell compared to the E500. I think people looking for a MB with a V-8 want speed.

It couldn't hurt to bring the E400CDI to the USA.

No but the CDI is offered in a 220(4cylinder) a 270(5cylinder) a 320(6 cylinder) and a 400 (8 cylinder)
I lived in europe for 2.5 years and owned a new 2003 E270cdi. Got 42 miles to the galoon and better performance than my 97 E320. I aslo owned an 2002 ML270CDI and got 35-40 miles to the gallon. That was great compared to the 15 miles i got on a 2000 ML320. Brabus(brabus D4) makes a kit that enhances the performance, both mileage and accelaration on any CDI engine by about 20%, and it is endorsed by the official Daimler/crysler group.
I am hoping that the CDI trend catches on in the US.
