I am driving to PA tomorrow (6-7 hrs) to buy an 89. Its the original owner, black on tan with 26,000 miles. They say the only major servicing is the replacement of the a/c lines which was completed.

Any tips or things to look for, for a newbie like me?

Thanks so much,

Phil<A href="http://members.cardomain.com/silver7">My Silver 7</A>

I'm sure you'll love the car, but make sure it has full maintenance records and that all required maintenance has been done on a regular schedule.

Has the timing belt been replaced? The car doesn't have a lot of miles, but it still might be a good idea to change it out.

I'm not sure about the extent of the records but they say it was serviced annually and it is the original owner. If the timing belt could be considered as 'major work' than I doubt it has been replaced as the seller stated the only 'major work' needing done and having been completed by them is the replacemnt of the a/c lines.

Any idea Alan on what I can expect to pay if I decide to go to my Lotus delaer for a timing belt replacement?

TIA,

Phil

The belt itself isn't expensive, but who knows about the labor...I'd just call them up and ask. You're going to have to get to know them sooner or later, so might as well make it sooner! ;-)

good point! Well, I've been doing lots of reading and it sounds like this is gonna be a fantastic car to drive (and own). If there's anything else I should keep my eyes peeled for as a first time buyer, let me know.

Otherwise, I will be reporting back in Wednesday after my return from a full day of driving to get this car on Tuesday!

Where are you driving from and where in PA is it? What price are they asking?

If you need to get the timing belt replaced, you may as well get the full "C" service done to the car. They usually run ~$2K at your local Lotus dealer/trusted Lotus "specialist". it would be a good idea since that belt, if unchanged, is 15 years old and about due.

Things to look for.... The list is extensive. Best advice is to check everything. Look at everything. Crawl under the car and inspect everything visually. Flip every switch and check every latch and door. If you can, do a compression test. Test drive, shift every gear. Feel how it drives.

If you would like, I can email you the pre-inspection list Lotus uses in the manual. Could be handy.

Most importantly, good luck!

I just purchased a 1991 Esprit SE Turbo. Different car obviously than the other one I was looking at. I bought it in Michigan, black on black.

Love it so far. I do have a couple pics the dealer emailed me, but they don't do it justice. I will take some on my own and post them soon.

There are a couple issues I need to get figured out. One of them is that the left side air vent in the instrument cluster is producing no air at all when the AC or fan is on and I've twisted the knob to try to open it in case it was closed but thats not the case.

The other issue is that the leather on the dash that meets at the seam of the dash and the windshield is pulling back a bit in 2 spots.

I'm sure more things will come up soon but other than that, its a trip so far, sounds f**kin awesome too!!
