My car lately won't start the first time I turn the key - it sort of chokes - it's almost there but althought it's not getting enough gas or something. But 100% of the time when I try and start it the second time it starts. What's going on?? Please help.

Mine does this 2 or 3 times a week when I leave work. It's the only place it ever happens -- never in my garage, and never when it's at the dealer.

The dealer had the car for almost two weeks recently trying to reproduce it while it was attached to various monitors -- but they were never able to do it.

I'm not terribly concerned, since it always starts on try #2. I'm convinced it's a software problem. But the dealer says they've never heard of it, and when I've asked on this board, no one else ever said that they had the same problem. I can't tell you how much better it feels to find out someone else's car is doing the same thing!

But mine's been doing it for a long, long time, maybe for 2 years. I'm not sure when it started. It's no big deal. If it cranks more than, say, three times, just turn the key off and back on, and it'll start. Every time.

I thought the "cold start issue" was that the car would start, but would either die quickly or would run rough for a short time. In this case, it simply will not start at all -- at least, with my car.

Every once in a while it will go through a period where it does that...but just like you say, it starts up right away on the second try.

I've started pumping the gas a little right as I turn the key and it hasn't happened since. I don't know if it's just a coincidence, but I'm sticking with it.

start of the day - when it's "cold" - it never happens again after that first event. rough idle and stalls happened to my car once or twice before as well.

position, but don't start it. Turn the key back to the off position and do it again. This should solve this problem. Dave.

That would repeat the problem (needing to turn the key twice) on EVERY start, not just every once in a while. I'd rather wait to see if it's necessary (for me, 2 or 3 days a week in the evening, never in the morning) before turning the key a second time.

while not terribly bad for the car, it is much better it starts the first time you crank the starter. Dave.
