i think they went from a 4 valve to a 3 valve and from 302 to 322 hp but i dont know what year. also i think there was a transmission change along the way. do you know what year these changes happened.

1999 was the first year of the 3 valve V-8 engine.

1996 SL500 and SL600 got the 5 speed auto.

The older engine was 315-322 (can't remember which) the newer engine is 302.

IT was in fact mid-1998. That was the year that the M113 engine replaced the M129. Also in 98, the SL320 was discontinued in the US, but an all new V6 SL320 (M112) replaced old inline-6.
There were also subtle changes to bodywork, the most noticable being the new aerodynamic wing mirrors.
