. . .regardless of where I bought the car; case in point: bought current vehicle in NJ, but Reeves (in Tampa) and Southpointe (in Sarasota) have always given me a car to drive (usually a vanilla 3-series, but an Infiniti FX 35 when I got latest SA performed).

I guess the dealer does not *have* to, however. . .

(Maybe it's a case of developing an amiable business relationship with a service writer or two)

There is no requirement to provide any customers with loaner cars of any kind by BMW. Each dealer sets their own policy. Many offer loaner cars only to "local" customers who bought the car at the dealership as a perk. Some don't offer loaner cars of any kind, and just refer you to Avis Rentals. Some offer loaners to all.

In my experience, the loaner process is very ad-hoc, even sometimes within a given dealership. Certain "good" customers are given preferential treatment, while others will hear that "all loaners are taken".

Getting in tight with your service writer is a good tactic. Sometimes you can get your salesman to lean on the service people also, if you have a salesman at the dealer in question.

I'd bought my car from BMW Bellevue but had some service issues and decided to try Seattle (this was with my MCoupe). They treated me like a king; loaners, great service, etc... That influenced my decision on where to buy my M3 and they got my business.

cheers, John

your next car there. The bmw dealership here in Lexington, KY will not give you a loaner if you did not buy it from them.
