I used to do the same thing Then I discovered this toneau cover. Im still on my original top 5+ years into it with 22k on the clock. Put over 9k in the first year and always put the top up and down (sometimes 8x a day!). Btw- the boot cover will cause visible scratches in the clear coat on a black car- they are nearly unavoidable. This tonneau cover takes the same time as putting the boot cover on and affords nearly the same protection and no wear/ tear on the top mechanism and no scratches in the clear coat... IMHO its a win. If you cant feel comfortable about security with this tonneau cover, the soft top provides only a marginal increase in security, so Id say youre better off not parking in the area.

Mine goes up and down daily - I use my car as my daily driver (until the snow hits the ground when I will use the Boxster) and park it in a public garage. I have had the car for six months now and have put 6500 miles on it. The old top had damage when I purchased the car and was replaced under warranty. I guess my new top will truly test the top design one more time as I will continue to use the car as the daily driver for the next three or so years. Skip

Car in a bubble :-) I won't make fun of your car and its special needs ;-) I don't use my top much for exactly the reason of the strings- less use= less wear & tear. As far as creasing, that battle was lost long ago.........
Car in a bubble :-)
My tops goes up when parked too.... because it is better to keep the fabric uncreased and taught, and keep an eye on the famously unreliable soft top strings. Since my car only gets used a few times a year I prefer leave the top up, but since my car lives in a plastic bubble cover I leave the window down for the charger. Agree. It may no look flashy, but it is functional I parked the car outside at my sister's while visiting and a thunderstorm rolled in. It must have rained for at least and hour. I was not aware until time to leave. The cover had pools of water on it. After carefully removing it, not one drop made it into the interior. It works. I use it extensively, even when parked in the garage to keep dust out of the interior.

My tops goes up for two reasons, ok three... #1- car wash. Unlike some other talented members I cannot control my hose with the excitement.... uh... lets get back on track :-) #2- the one time I misjudged the weather because the weather man said "the rains over!" well I was on the highway and it wasnt and there were no covered places to stop for miles! Glad I kept a towel in the car. Also the wipers just help the water to get inside, so I went faster and no wipers! Truly a "DOH!" moment. #3- dealer service.

I use that cockpit cover when parking for short stints to keep the sun off the seats and interior. Although it isn't the greatest looking cover, it works great, is lightweight, and is easily stowed. (It's also the only one I've been able to find for the Z8.) Black/Crema 2003 Alpina #480

Oh yeah. I use the cover Z8Mania pictured above.
I leave the top down on my 2001 99.9% of the time. I have done that for years with no issues. I personally prefer it without the top - hard/soft. I make sure that I clean and polish the plastic window and put on the blanket. I put the top up maybe once a year when I polish the window. My rear window looks like I just got the car off the showroom floor. I believe that making sure the window is clean prior to using the blanket has been the key.

OK to keep the top down for long periods? Also, I know the manual says the hard top should be removed when storing the vehicle for extend period. How about the soft top? What's the ideal state, open or close, for extended periods? 2005 Toyota Prius 2002 BMW Z8

I dont even bother to put the top up I use this tonneau cover when I park or even store the car. Yes some dust can get in this way, but I try to limit my use of the top.

Routing the Battery Charger Cable My concern is that routing the battery charger cable over the driver window (fully closed) would, over time, damage the window seal. The alternative, leaving the window partially down, will expose the interior to dust. I am wondering how you guys deal with this? Is there an alternative? Thanks! 2005 Toyota Prius 2002 BMW Z8
