just picked up my 2007 550i

with SMG. I driven sticks and many many automatic, i have to say that i am learning how to drive all over again. the SMG does jerk during shifing as i am learning. the reason that i went with SMG is that i live in the Rocky Mountains, small town. never have to worry about traffic jams. taking the car out in the twisty mountains is awesome. Verdict on SMG... still out, will post opinion later

Re: M5 has been a mistake for Me

I am desperately trying to maintain an open mind on the M5's SMG. However, I have been piling up information on the M5 since it was released in Europe. Guess what? I happened to have saved the Tivoed episode of MotorTrend test drive of the M5. I remember discussing with my IT buddy the way it set the skull of the female test driver. I commented on how the car jerked her head toward the headrest each shift and I added that the 360 Stradale did it a more docile way and I got ridiculed to the max. I was told that I was ignorant.

This morning my wife were in a BMW dealer and came in really, really close to driving off on a M5. The color I wanted wasn't available and the salesperson was asking for a 5k markup. I held off on buying one until I read more about the car not mentioning researching the price.

It is people like you that keeps forums like this alive. You may be a poseur but I can certainly take input from all over, on every response to the thread you started. I became more informed and happy to take, deduct from all responses and be able to make an intelligent decision.

By the way, when I test drove the M today, the car will not start and shift down from neutral to 1st if the door was closed. The engine really sounded funny when it did but eventually settled down after a minute.

Did you have the same experience? I am starting to think about waiting for the second iteration of the E90. I want to make the best decision since this will be my first BMW coming from an STI. It will be a huge jump so I want to make sure I land perfectly.

    Thanks for the post.

    Re: M5 Mistke for me

You are a bad fit for a M5....set the car up with your dealer and go have fun. The car is a blast to hammer through the gears. 2Nd to 1st is bumpy, but that is overcome by staying in 2nd until almost at a stop, then downshift

How fast did your autobahn / Ring blasts get?

At 120 mph.......the Sled Pig felt rock solid when I pushed her down that long lonesome highway last week.

    Engine is very impressive. :D

You're correct Phil but I'd guess most owners of

the M5 will in fact simply tool around town in the car. Especially those of who live in the U.S.

Come on you are all just bashing a great car

You people astonish me at your remarks on this vehicle. I work for BMW as a tech, not even a potential owner and i love the car. So far i cannot belive that customers are talking this way of such an advanced automobile. You know if you want a cheap sports car go out and buy a corvette. Christ the M5 is an M5, a crazy driving experience for both the driver and any passengers that might be along. BMW didn't design this car to be an everyday city driver, although we are selling snow tire packages? it is a sports car of an unpresidented level, just because all of this new technology is surrounding us don't go out and say that the smg is garbage and dosn't shift to your liking, that is ludachrist the M5 is only sold with the SMG and the 6 speed is only talk not even on the market as of yet. I have driven the new M5 and the old M5 and the even older M5 and you know what being an electronics expert on these cars I can only say one thing. YOU are all underestimating this car, JUST toady for instance i had one come in on the hook with 900km on it and the customer claimed that it's oild had pumped out all over the freeway and it was bone dry and was totally worked up over the purchase. Only for me to find on page 182-183 of his owners manual that the car was down 1Ltr of oil and there was nothing otherwise wrong with the car. Education is key with these cars. People just seem to buy it into it for the Name when all that is just fine but gosh DO SOME RESEARCH PRIOR TO COMMITING if this vehicle doesn"T soot your needs then just enjoy the look whenever you pass one on the street (OR ONE PASSES YOU) but don't bash one of the leading edge cars on the market for reasones that are fact. THE CAR IS FAST AND HANDLES GREAT SO COME ON IF YOU DON"T LIKE IT STAY AWAY DON'T ruin and bash the car for it being great. City driving was not what this car was designed for and i'm sure you all could agree. This is a savage beast that deserves the roads it was designed for, Autobahns and open winding and unpopulated roads!!!

Re: M5 has been a mistake for Me

Don't feel bad. A family friend, who buys every (yes every) new top line car is making a similar complaint. He loves the car and hates the transmission. This is coming from a guy who has driven everything out there. His current inventory includes the Bentley GT, Carrara GT & SLR.

My guess is BMW missed with the testing and didn't factor the traffic condition into the mix as heavily as they should have.

I can say, from personal experience, I have pruchased cars with blemishes I didn't see. I was obviously blinded by the lust that hits all of us from time to time. Call it ego, want or a dream.. everyone on this board has it at some level. If they didn't, they would be driving simple transportation and wouldn't have time to be posting on auto boards.

I would think you should be able to sell this car and pick up something more in line with your needs.

    Good Luck,

Mark M (not the same as the other poster)

Big girls don't cry. Sorry I had to say that.

BMW screwed the pooch with the USA version of the E36 M3. The Euro one was a great car and even offered the earlier version of the SMG. That BMW labelled the USA version with the M badge was a travesty I hope they never repeat.

I drove an RS6 when they first came out and agree that the automatic box really takes the edge off the car.

I also drove the original Taurus SHO when it was a new car. I was surprised with how good it was on the track. I thought that the Yanks had finally figured out the enthusiast market. They were on the right track there.

The new M5 is a great car. If I was living on the Autobahn and had lots of money I would consider it a keeper, and a huge step up from the E39 M5. If I enjoyed shifting for myself, and I do, and was not looking ro exploit the the absolutely astounding performance on a regular basis, I would be quite content with the older M5.

    I thank you. I for one bought a Z8 in 2001 sight

unseen without a test drive. I still love the car today. DO NOT call yourself a putz.

You loved it and bought it with the expectation that you were not spending $10K on a hyundai, rather the 'ultimate driving machine'.

    Shame on BMW...not you.

Thanks for letting us know. I was waiting on a M6 as well. Now I will put the money to better use.

You are right. I just received a call from my

dealer in Bryan, Texas. I had never inquired about an M5. Apparently one will be available in their allocation in three weeks and his message in my mailbox was that he had asked the service advisor if he had any customers that would be interested in the M5 and that how he got my number.

Well I decided to see how the car was faring and after reading this board I can see why the car is all of sudden so 'available'.

I am going to pass and wait for the next generation 'M3' as stable mate to my other Bimmers.

If anyone wants an M5, call Garlyn Shelton BMW in Bryan, TX. I have always unmatched deals from them.
