Earlier 2000 had oil consumption issues that newer cars supposedly don't have, but it you read the archives here you will see oil consumption complaints about all year models. I would look for 01+ just for the cosmetic updates. I never paid for any of the service on my '02 (free maint), so I can't say for sure if any of them cost more the they did on either of my M3s (E36 and E46). Extra oil changes with 10/60 were $100 at my dealer, which was only a tad more then buying the parts and doing it yourself with a CCA discount on oil and filter.

Your input on buying an 2000-2002 M5?

Just wanted to know if any of you owners of an M5 had any problems/issues with your cars.
What is general maintenance on these cars (i.e. oil change, brakes, inspection 1 & 2)

    Appreciate your input.

    Thank you very much.
