Re: hmm mr Fahey... you can read.. I know..... I hate quote other people on stuff that the factory supplies. I guess I was just trying to confirm your info for ya ;) One thing..., definately keep the exhaust valves a bit looser then the intakes. They run hotter and the last thing you wnat is a tight exhaust valve..., the problem will compound and before you know it you'll have a flame thrower attacking your exhaust valves and seats. And the will crack. I let mine get too tight.., the original lash was set to .010" and after say 15k miles this was the result. http://phil.infostreet.com/Burnt_Valves/Burnt%20Vaves%202005/PICT0877.JPG http://phil.infostreet.com/Burnt_Valves/Burnt%20Vaves%202005/PICT0878.JPG http://phil.infostreet.com/Burnt_Valves/Burnt%20Vaves%202005/PICT0880.JPG
Re: hmm mr Fahey... you can read..
Re: hmm mr Fahey... you can read.. I always run my intake clearances at the tight end but leave the exhausts on the loose end to avoid potential problems. Can't say it makes much difference either way though.
hmm mr Fahey... you can read.. ----from the sticker under my hood---- Valve clearances.. intake/exhaust 0.28-0.33 mm guess what.. that is converted to 11 thou to 13 thou .... so he is no genius.. Althouh he may have misread that sticker: -it is not saying intake = .28mm and exhaust is 0.33mm -it says there is a range and all clearnaces to be adjusted to the same range.. It is a bit of a stretch to call it fahey's rule when the OEM sticker says the same thing :) thanks again for the reply .. at least I am confirmed as what is recommended..
hmm mr Fahey... you can read..
BMW has been metric for ever and the US cars have been metric for over 10 years .... now i gotta go figure out what these "thou" things are LOL thanks... pulled my intake manifolds off this afternoon.. seeing as i am waiting for injector tips now.... i wanted to give them a good scrubbing and clean up underneath them.. I am amazed about how clean the back side of the intake valves are.. totally spotless.. and I found a used shim wedged in next to the started motor.. evidence that they have been tended to before... maybe freeing it will stop a rattle too... Re: valves clearances... After I burned three valves I decided to follow Fahey's rule. Intake - .011" Exhaust - .014" If you race the car adjust every 10k miles. Daily driver every 20k miles. Fahey also recommends clearences being set when hot.., but you can also do it cold if you want.., he just prefers hot. Also.., if you ever replace a cam always use new shim pads. Philo. ---------
Re: valves clearances...
here is how it looks in there
valves clearances... I remember Ethan telling us that he ran his a little tighter than on the sticker under the hood. I checked mine today and a .28 feeler was snug under all but 4 valves... those 4 were tighter. a .21 was loose. my other feeler gauges were too rusted to use hehehehe. Anyway the engine was also still a little warm.. not hot but not fully cooled. I know that too tight is a problem. but what number is cause for alarm? ANy comments? Bruce
