I was driving the wife's X3. The on-board computer said I had 6 miles left. I was stuck in a traffic jam, I could smell a gas station on the other side of the road. The 6 miles left went to 3 dash lines (no remaining miles listed). I drove another 3 miles and made it to the station. I filled up the tank with 17.8 gallons.

I had the same thing happen to me in the mountains of Colorado in my Z3. I drove about 10 miles while it was on the 3 dash lines. It was getting dark and I was in the mountains when I found a gas station. Talk about scared.

i have also been in single digits before.. at $50-60 a tank, i have been leery of filling her up any sooner than i have to..

Happened to me in my 2001 330i...

Trip Computer showed about 30 miles to empty. Dealer replaced what it said was a faulty sensor. I try to never let my tank get much below 1/4 tank. I did howerver have one incident in my X3 where I got down to where my trip computer showed only 6 miles to empty and I did not run out of gas. I was very nervous to say the least (I was in the middle of nowhere in eastern Washington state and had misjudged the distance to the nearest gas station).

at least i got $5 worth of gas for free from roadside assistance- on the semi-bright side....

this could be a byproduct of the “lie-o-meter” telling you that you are getting better mileage than you are

I just purchased a 2005 X3 3.0i and the previous owner had this same thing happen. It was a faulty fuel sender in the tank. This was the only problem he ever had with his X3.

first time i have run out of gas ever, in any car...

Miles to Empty showed as low as 36 Miles going uphill, then showed 76 miles when i was going downhill

the fuel light came on. the tank showed a solid 1/8 left, even as i was on the side of the road with the the car out of gas..
