thanx for the info.

i'm going to try and look at the car this weekend to get a better idea of just how bad the damage is. if its just the frame rail extension thats bent, shouldn't be a big problem. the rest of the car is supposed to be in good condition. lots of new work done just prior to the wreck.

collision colapsed the energy absorbing section of the rail. It appears to be a butt joint and I haven't crawled under recently to look at it. The bumper is still solid after 8 years.

... is may not be worth fixing if the engine/drivetrain are worn out. As long as the damage is limited to the frame rail and the strut tower and surrounding support is sound it can be fixed (for a price). Is there are salvage title? (obviously not good). If the engine, drivetrain, interior, etc. is good, the car is probably worth more in parts than whole.

What exactly was done? Was the complete rail replaced or just the piece that was bent? Also, do you recall where and how bad it was bent? Sorry for all the questions----just being curious about any problems which may have occurred.

Actually, this is a E28 M5 that has been hit on the passenger side corner that I found out has about 4" of the frame rail bent. I was considering buying the car and repairing it. I understand about the E28 interchangability, but I was hoping to stay away from replacing the complete frame rail if at all possible. I just don't know if its feasible to cut the end of the bad frame rail off and weld on a new section from a good rail.

Bob - the bodies of any old e28 and the M5 are the same, so you don't need a donor M5 for these parts. The drive line, rear suspesion, front brakes, interior, trunk, rims, shadowline trim and probably a few other items I am forgetting are specific to the M5.

Is your project a new project to the board? If so, what is the scope of your work? I am in DC and am in Philly often as a good buddy lives there (my bud helped me replace the crank and head on the M5).

Has anyone attempted to replace the end of a M5 frame rail? Its the end where the bumper shock connects. Can it be done? Should it be done?
