    Good to hear. TR told me that they did not have

    BMW sensors in Sept. but it is good to know that they now do. It is a very good company. That kind of expertise and customer service is uncommon.

    Tire Rack to the Rescue

    After complaining about the misinformation they gave me about the need for wheel-based TPMS sensors, Tire Rack got the problem resolved for me. I purcahsed a set of BMW TPMS transmitters & valves from Tire Rack, and they agreed to cover the cost of my having the winter tires dismounted so they could be rebalanced & remounted with the TPMS transmitters and sensors. I used an authorized Tire Rack installer in the suburban Philly area (German Auto Specialists) whoc did a first-rate job and everything now works perfectly. So, Tire Rack made things right -- which explains why I'll do business with them again in the future if I need wheels or tires.

    Some 2006 and most 2007 have the TPM system now.

    Basically if you have silver metal valve stems then you have the TPM style of system.
    But the sensors are different than the earlier version of TPM found in the E65, so the dealer needs to get the correct ones as well as the wheel shops.
    If the wrong ones are installed then the system wont initialize and the system faults.

    I used BMW sensors on BMW Radial Spoke 18" and

    had my tire/wheel shop install and mount. No problem initializing when I put them on a week or so ago. Only took a few moments and a short drive to get the warning signal to turn off. I can understand if the sensors do not work, but doubt that it has anything to do with the wheels. The Dunlop Winter Sport tires are not yet totally scuffed in, although the weather has been so warm there has been no way to se how well they do in icy conditions. I had the same tires on a former Audi and they were unbeatable. Apparently the Tire Rack sensors are not made for BMW, or at least that is what TR told me. They do work on Audi's and other makes.

    Same Boat With You

    Today, I had my Blizzaks (already mounted on wheels -- package from Tire Rack) put on my 650i Conv w/sport pkg. Even though Tire Rack promised me that the TPM would work with the new wheels & tires, and even though the dealer swore to me that this was also the case, they were both wrong -- as I found out today. Now I have two options: either live without the TPM sensor working properly until the snow tires come off (and with the yellow TPM indicator light always lit), or else having the dealer see if they can install TPM sensors on my non-BMW wheels. I just find it very frustrating that both Tire Rack and the dealer had this cavalier attitude about the whole thing, as if they were in Jamaica ("No problem, man") or something.

    By the way, the Blizzaks stick like glue to the road, so I can understand why people love them.

    Not sure, but my 650 was a May 2006 build and

    has sensors, which I determined after much confusion at the service dept. of the dealership--even after giving them the VIN several times. They continued to claim into Sept. that the VIN is not reliable when trying to determine if sensors are installed. Hard to believe. when I ordered them for my winter wheels, they took a week or two to arrive. Apparently there is relatively little demand for replacement sensors.

    i had a set[ p zeros] on my 330 cic and they were great snow tire. however when i turned the was a definite hestization before the car would turn. the mit pilot a/s do not have this problem and are great snow tires as wlee

    i've had very good success running 18" pirelli snowsport 240's. check out the customer ratings on for the tires you're considering.-lex

    You're advice and tips are comforting. I'll continue looking at options re: what would be the best for me and my new 650i for the winter here in MA. Would love to get away with using what I have on a great auto with it's original wheels and "low profiles".

    Not sure exactly what the problem with the winter Pirelli's is but my wheel/tire shop, whose opinion I respect because they see all the tires after the usual problems and were emphatic about avoiding Pirelli's. I had summer Pirelli's on an 02 Carrera 4S and they were fine for 6k miles, them I traded the car. I gather from various MB, Audi and Porsche forums that they wear fast and tend to be noisier than others. I wanted winter tires, as oposed to all-season tires, which I believe that Pirelli makes in run flat for the 19' stock Sport wheels. While I far prefer the look of the 19's, in snow the wider wheels and tires are sub-optimal.

    What kind of problems have the Pirelli's had? I'm also searching for "something" for winter (preferrably on my 19" wheels). My tire dealer suggested going with the 18-8 rim with Dunlop or another manafacturer. It would be good if the Pirellis worked.

    Need sensors after all...

    after speaking with several people at the dealership and bringing the car there the techs finally came up with a part number for the sensors. At first they told me that there were different sensors that may have been installed on my May '06 build 650 sport, which seemed odd because I had given them the VIN to check several times. After dropping the car in the service area and being told that it would cost me $119 for them to dismount a tire just to confirm which sensor, if any, the car had. Fortunately, my sales advisor intervened and got the answer.The attitude of the service rep was quite aggressive and insulting. His lack of knowledge and distain for a customer is the only negative experience that I have had with the car, which has been a delightful automobile in the first 4 months. The valve stems and sensors were $340, which when added to the cost of BMW wheels, even through, gets pricey. BTW, the dealership actually wanted a premium over the price of the Radial Spoke 118 wheels in the accessoriy catalogue for the 6 Series.

    Note on winter wheel and tire setup...

    I need winter tires for my '06 650i conv Sport and decided to get the BMW Radial Spoke 18X8 wheels (from, thanks to cobradav's post)and Dunlop winter sport tires. I had been under the impression that I needed tire pressure sensors for the May 06 build car, but the dealer just checked my VIN and informed me that I do not need the sensors, as the TPM system still uses the ABS to detect tire circumference differential. Would have gone with 19" for winter but the only winter run flat tires were Pirellis, which apparently have had problems, according to my tire/wheel shop here. Unfortunately, Nokian does not make run flat winter tires, or I would have gotten them. I just hope that the tech was correct about the TPS.
