    I use the HUD all the time and drive almost always with polarized sungasses. While not perfect, my display is visible when I turn it up to the highest "brightness" setting. Hope it works for you!

    When I used the HUD at the DE last summer, I did notice that it was not visible with my polarized sunglasses. They worked around this problem with the other LED displays, I wonder why not the HUD?

    Comment on HUD

    HUD was the only option I didnt get back in Feb 05, and after reading everyone's experiences I was sorry I didnt get it. The one BIG issue I see with it is that with SMG it doesnt display your gear!! To me, that is incredibly stupid, and that seems to be one of the most useful purposes of the HUD feature. Usually I have my current gear in mind when I downshift, but every once and a while I am wrong or not sure, and I either have to look down to the dash or accidently get into 1st gear and end up jerking the car. Am I the only one who sees this as a major deficiency?

    BMW, are you watching? Can you please add this feature next time you are recoding the next version?

    I am interested in the board's feeling on this. Thanks in advance.

    Like the STEP, but did not drive SMG so cannot

    comment on that. After about 5k miles the engine seems a lot stronger and the car is surprisingly fast for its weight and power/torque, although I did not buy it for speed. Best part of the car is its nearly perfect balance. Love the head up display and did find it annoying for the first few miles, but adjusted light and would not want another car without it. Have AS, and like it, but did not drive a 650 without it, so do not have a great frame of reference on the two.

    Hud and Active Steering

    HUD is a great choice. I really like it. It is not a distraction in any way. When you combine it with Nav destination the directions are great. The only bad part is it is not a feature you can easily brag about. None of your passengers can even see it but you can in all lighting conditions. The only exception might be if you are behind a light colored car at a stop light.

    Active steering was a feature I added after I ordered the car but in time before it started in production. I'm glad I did. It took all of a few minutes to adapt to it. Once you have driven a car with AS you only notice it by missing it - driving a car that does not have it.

    Had 04 645 with stepauto, now have 05 645 with SMG. I'm with Mike, love the SMG, most of the benefits of a manual without all the work. If you have a lot of stop and go rush hour, it may not be for you. However, I do a lot of city driving and still love it.

    STEP is a fine auto and has a handy manual mode that can hold gears very well (will not up shift in manaul mode until red line.). And as you remark not a slouch in the speed department. Takes a very good manual or SMG driver to ensure it is quicker in 0-60 or 1/4 mile than the STEP (less skill required of course, but still some tricks required). I've Autox'd mine a few times and it does quite well for the 4000 lb beast we are. Also does well on the Tail of the Dragon (318 curves in 11 miles). My AS does well too but would not push that on you unless you wanted it. Just be sure you test same car with and without AS back to back.

    Just recently on b i m m e r f e s t 6er forum a couple of members there reported on their Pearl Leather. Both were positive, but no long term wear info yet. I did not see any holes in it as if it were ventilated in the pics provided. Here is one quote "I took of a new option in the 650i for MY2007- Pearl Leather. In my case, the color is beige. Although the photos are not that good, it will give you some idea of the type of leather and the special patterns on the headrests and in portions of the seat. Pearl also comes in Black...but, interestingly, not in Chateau. In addition, the center console, arm rests and sunvisors are in black 'Nasca' leather (like the 750s). Personally, I found the Pearl interior much more upscale than Dakota and was glad I paid for the upgrade. It is second best to the better Merino leather found in the M6, although the Pearl on the 650 has a very limited choice of colors - black or beige".

    Aux will come standard on your 6er. Nealy all those that have retrofited to the iPod MOST integrated system like it (can co-exist with Aux input but as you already know the 6DCD goes). But the retrofit seems to go much smoother with less issues if you already have the 6CDC and swap it out. Matter of fact many have been DIY swaps with no action required by dealer.

    HUD - well it is a must - I waited 8 months to order my 6er just waiting for HUD to be available (1st availability was on '05 models beginning with build dates in late November '04. As already mentioned it has on/off switch. You actually set the display brightness as an offset to your dash lighting (higher or lower) and then the whole set of lighting can be controlled by the variable resistor thumbwheel on dash. Once I set mine it is perfect night or day. I have never had to adjust in 2 years except when new parts were installed/PROGMAN updated and to set everything up again. Best dash lighting (including HUD and iDrive) I have ever had. Now would not even consider new car without HUD.

    My .02 as an owner of mineral silver\beige pearl 645 conv.

    1) HUD - get it! For reasons mentioned (can be dimmed or turned off)

    2) Active steering - nice! You'll adapt in a day and love it.

    3) Active cruise - would not get another car without it if offered (a car that brakes for you, what more could you want!! Will definitely miss it on the M6)

    4) Consider the grey top vs black for the mineral silver. Less contrast in colors, IMHO.

    5) If your at all inclined to a manual, SMG is wonderful. It's the future now. Not that it can't be improved on but all manuals will be SMG of sorts in years to come. A manual clutch pedal will be ancient history, kinda like "three on the tree" of the past.

    6) Beige can be cleaned but if your in a dusty\dirty atmosphere it tends to get dirty on the threads\seams and doesn't seem to come out .

    1. Re: pearl leather. This is a new option for 2007, it is supposedly slightly nicer then the dakota. The reason I'm considering it is that it does extend the leather onto the center console (black nasca leather). My old car was really well appointed with leather and I unfortunately got used to it.

    2. I dont know if the dealer will credit me for the cd player, it comes with the logic 7 package. If I can I will try to swap it out when the car comes in. I'm leasing the car so it may not be possible. ipod has really taken over as my primary source of music so I would really like to swap it out :-)

    3. I prefered the standard steering as well.

    4. I'll reconsider the HUD, does it have a dimmer switch or only off/on?

    My car will be a daily driver as well, freeway frequently bumper to bumper driving. I'm sure I didn't get the most out of my cambiacorsa. I'm leaning towards the auto for the same reasons as you.

    Can't comment on tranny, but on the other matters!

    I have manual trans and so can't comment on your choices there. But the rest of your post deserves at least some initial thoughts! Here are mine:

    1. Pearl leather looks to be a rip-off. Can't tell the diff, regular leather is free. I really don't get it. My leather also wraps around the front dash, next to the windshield, looking more "complete." Pearl does not do that. Pearl does have some "holes" in the leather (maybe for better breathing, which of course is a good thing), but the car still does not have ventilated seats, so it's not that good. Maybe Pearl leather is better-wearing, and all the rest of us suckers with just "regular" (no-cost) leather will be paying big bucks for seat reconditioning in 5 years, but I don't think so. My own guess is that BMW has figured out how to increase prices without showing the full increase (by charging for what used to be free).

    2. "Aux" input in center console will take an iPod. BUT are you sure you don't want the iPod adapter (in glove compartment)? Yes, it kills the 6-CD changer (so don't order it), but you still have the in-dash CD, which works fine. (See my post earlier in the month on the topic of the iPod dealer installation.) Plus you get substantially better sound from the iPod, control of the iPod from the iDrive and the steering wheel, and iPod charging while you drive. Frankly, the only reason I would not do that would be if I never used an iPod. I see no downside (because you save the 6-CD changer cost, offset by the iPod adapter and installation cost).

    3. Active steering is enjoyed by some, not by others. My dealer told me it was good for old people (which is all I needed to hear, not to order it!). It has far less road feel, but it "wanders" less on uneven pavement, etc. In other words, active steering gives the BMW the road compliance of a Lexus; without it, you have a BMW.

    4. Please do reconsider HUD. I was uncertain, so I bought it, and it is flat out awesome. You can have the HUD show any or all of (a) your speed, (b) nav directions, (c) cruise control and (d) service notes. I keep mine with a, b and c, and it's just a real benefit to have the info right smack in front of you. It shows up on the hood, really, maybe 3 or 4 feet in front of the windshield (i.e., it doesn't intgerfere with the view of the road). And, don't forget, you can turn it off! (I'm 5'10" tall, and the way I have my seat and steering wheel configured, I actually can't see the speedometer at 45 to 75 mph, so the HUD is really helpful.)

    I have a 645 with SMG, just turned 20,000 miles. I love the SMG. But suggest you drive one for an extensive test drive to compare to your Maserati.

    As Pan suggests, if you do lots of stop and go, heavy traffic driving, I'd stick with the auto. But, if you have lots of open road (and PA has some great open and back roads) - go with the SMG.

    I didn't

    I know there are purist would never consider a car like this unless it was as close to race ready as possible. My reality is simple. I only drive one car, a 650i. 90% of the time I'm either in rush hour stop and go traffic or interstate highways, which in the west are essentially straight. The rare times I'm lucky to be in the mountains and I'm lucky enough not to have a looky-loo in front of me, I get to push it.

    In the past I swore by manual shift cars. The type of driving I do now I just plain got tired of every few minutes going from first to second back to first . This automatic with its optional manual shift is the best option for me.

    I never considered the SMG. I figured if I'm going to drive as with an automatic buy the automatic.

    Will I miss shifting with the spect?

    I am placing an order for my 1st BMW on monday:

    650i conv, mineral silver, cream beige pearl leather, black top, sport pkg, logic 7, comfort access, heated seats, AUTO

    I will be replacing a Maserati Coupe Cambiacorsa (like SMG). I have enjoyed the cambiacorsa and understand that the SMG is a better sequential then the Mas/Ferrari magnetti-marelli unit. I was surprised to see that the specs for the SMG are only slighly quicker then the auto, and gets worse gas mileage (gas guzzler tax).

    Should I order the SMG instead of the auto? I'm thinking no. Any cooments would be appreciated.

    A few other less urgent questions:

    Any info on Pearl leather?

    With the logic 7 and cd player, is there and aux for an i-pod, if I dont want to swap out the cd player for the i-pod unit?

    BTW I did not like the active steering (less road feel), nor the HUD (found it distacting)
