    odd steering problems updates

    So I whimped out and took the car into the dealer for service. It is 20 degrees out and I just can't get out there to fix it like I used to.
    They come up with bad center link and idler arm and tires cupped as likely resultant. I say ok since they are the only 2 things I haven't replaced. Results excellent. Still a little shimmy, shutter but the car is a joy to drive again. More later on the reasons why the e28 M5 is the perfect car for me.

    I have terrible wheel hop in 1st gear (the cause of my ripped driveshaft center bearing I think) and also have steering shutters at 55 (but I have new thrust arm bushings and balanced wheels). You think this could be the problem? I've wanted to replace it for awhile now, but had springs/shocks at the top of my list.

    I put on e39 sport rims also and felt a floaty not so great feel too. I did find a small rub mark on the shock tower,but seems that only on hard cornering because of the relativly small mark. I am thinking about putting the old rims back on to eliminate that part...
    I also think that the rear subframe bushing are done again...kind of strange twitchs sometimes.

    Seth, bending the center support could cause the problems you mentioned as you would have bad toe out in the front. Maybe you haven't noticed it. But I would check to see if there are any dents on the center steering rod. I adjust my alighnment myself using a basic alightment jig, so you could probably check that out yourself. Even if you did dent the steering rod, you could probably leave it in there and just re-alighn the front end.

    Another thing that might have you feeling floaty are:
    loose compression nut where the upper steering shaft splines meet the lower steering shaft under the dash board
    also, a pitman arm that has a bad bushing will move vertically as well as horizontally, making your right wheel imprecise. You usually notice this when right turns feel more precise than left turns.

    I don't think this is going to help with the floating but I also had a shimmy problem I chased for a long time.

    High speed wheel balancing took a lot of it away but it is ALL gone now. The solution... rear diff mount (I am not kidding you) Of course, I had to wait for the noises to get so bad that we replaced the mount. Imagine my surprise when it fixed my steering wheel vibration too. What a deal ;-)

    odd steering problems

    Hello -- as most of you know my M5 is back on the road after a lengthy head swap. It is running pretty darn well. Before all of my woes began, I had some power steering fluid leakage. I thought I traced it to a weak clamp and had it fixed. I have also replaced all of the front suspension, except the "center link" and steering and idler arms. I may have hit the "center link" with the tail of the transmission as I removed the engine to replace my crankshaft. I also have the style 32 e39 rims on the car with relatively new yokohamas.
    My steering is kind of not so good. I have a slight shimmy at 50 to 55 and then at 65 all the way up it gets very imprecise and floaty. I feel like the I may have multiple problems going on, but can't pin point anything. These are all guesses -- the shimmy might be a tire problem. The imprecise and floaty feeling has got me slightly stumped. Could it be the power steering pump? I wonder if I let the fluid get to low when I had my leak...and I still have a slight leak I can't get under control.

    any help would help me make the car a real joy again.
