    Re: Third Time Around!

So Kathy, did the new 6 come with another Driving School invite to SC?

I had moved on to a 997S and am now driving a 550i, but have my eye on an '08 650 vert. Good hearing from you again.

What is you interior color? I am partial to

Stratus Gray/black top and chose Chateau Red for my interior of my 06 sport model.

Any comments on new vs. old?

Welcome back, andthanks for the return and enthusiastic news of your 3rd. I'm 40K miles into my first, which I bouhgt via ED around the same time as your first (less said about that the better). Glad that you persevered and are happy.

    Hi Kathy
Sorry it took so long to answer your original post.I got stuck on stupid trying to get back onto the forum! It is not fun being a bear of little brain sometimes! I sure hope your car is doing fine now and well broken in.
Went to the Sharkfest in Asheville last weekend and met some great folks there including Cobradav who is super!! Met some wondeful people there and had a great time on the Tail of the Dragon. 311 curves in 13 miles! Truly awesome with 5 6's, and M-3 and an 850! What great people Bimmer folks are!
I wish you well in your car and so much fun!
graham at 49000 miles and lovin' it!!Graham

Re: So you have comfort access?

Thanks for the insights. I now live only 3 miles from my office and it is mostly all downtown city driving. So.... my daily commute isn't getting things all that revved up! I will look into the charger as a backup..... just in case!
  • 04-14-2007, 06:02 PM

    So you have comfort access?

Then this is a possibility as you can walk away from the car with the ignition on.
I haven't tested it yet to see how long it will remain on but I would hope that when the system doesn't see a key near by that it would time out after 20 minutes then shut the car down.
Or does the valet leave the key in it?

If you get the charger from the dealer they need to sell you the one that has alligator clips on it, not the one the that goes in the cigarette lighter as that is shut down in 20 minutes.

I would highly reccomend one if your trips are now shorter, if they run that test plan Imentioned it may come up as "unfavorable driving habits" since the battery may not fully recharge between trips.

The rule used to be that it took about 15 miles to re-charge the battery after a start up, not sure on these more modern and complex cars, but it could be more.

  • 04-14-2007, 11:33 AM

It was fine in the morning

Good info on the battery. I am only driving short distances these days as I've moved downtown and am only a few miles from my office.

Another thought though ... since it had been parked at a valet parking garage ... I'm wondering if perhaps they didn't hit the "stop" button the second time to completely kill the radio, etc., and if that had been left on while I was in my dinner meeting. That could have drained the battery some.....

I am good friends with the head of service at my dealer. He told me about 'limp home' mode as well. We're monitoring the situation to see what transpires...........
  • 04-13-2007, 11:41 PM

It "may" be fine in the morning...................

...depending on how far you drove.

It sounds like the battery was weak on start up, a low voltage situation will affect the transmission and cause it to go into limp home mode were it is locked into 3rd gear.

If the car is driven for short trips you may want one of the BMW battery chargers, but I would guess you would already have one by now as this could have happened with any of the other ones.

If you take it in for this make sure they run through the "energy diagnosis" test plan as this can help lead them to the reason the battery was getting discharged.

Since the cigarette lighters get turned off after 15 minutes I doubt it was anything like a cell phone charger.

Maybe make sure the battery cables are tight on the battery or let them worry about it, I haven't seen many battery draw issues on the 6 series, maybe it is just a bad battery?

Re: You're NOT going to believe this.....

Good to have you back....but sorry to hear about this latest episode. Can't wait to hear the reaction from the dealer,

2004 645ci SMG - still going strong with DINAN upgrades being installed in May

You're NOT going to believe this.....

.... tonight I go to start up the 650, and it's a bit slow to turn over ... and then it starts on the second attempt ... and then I get a nastygram in the I-Drive screen warning of a TRANSMISSION FAULT (only drive moderately .... etc., etc.,)

Drove it home cuz it was late, wouldn't shift on it's own (auto trans), and couldn't shift it by throwing it into manual steptronic mode.....

Hoping it was a glitch and will be fine in the morning.

IS IT ME - - - OR WHAT?????????!!!!!!!!!!

    Re: Third Time Around!

Alright, good to hear from you and that the 6er is worth continuing to update. I am in for a MY08. I will have ~49000 miles at the 32 month mark. Been trying to get into an 8 series to help offset miles I am putting on teh 6er as daily driver, but so far have not found the right one. You Cabrio folks are making it darn hard for me to stay true to my performance orientation. If the MY08 has the new STEP "Performance" tranny, similar to the e90/92 series and with paddle shifters, I'll bet the the '08 Cabrio will be on a par with my puny 645 Coupe. But, and this is the killer, wife already has a Cabrio (pretty, but dull Audi) so not sure I can pull it off.

Best of luck with new one - I see less and less initial complaints on each iteration on the e60 and 63 so BMW is bringing them around to better quality - which I believe is a testament to our collective perseverance

Hi Kathy, good to see you back and still..........

with BMW, thought maybe you had enough since we didn't see you here anymore.
These cars just keep getting better and better, may this one be your best yet!

    Re: Third Time Around!

Actually - I had a 3-year lease - it's just that I had two vehicles during the first 3 years.... remember?! Everything I hear is that the residuals have been pretty strong all the way around. Dealer has been great - absolutely terrific support. Why would I go anywhere else?

Glad to know I helped.... you are certainly welcome.

    Re: Third Time Around!

Yep - back for more - just like you guys! I will probably do the driving experience again also - it was just too much fun to skip! I had 40K on mine when I turned it in last weekend. Like you, I picked mine up in May of '04, but then - as you know - it was replaced and I got my second one in August of '04.... so I put the 40k on this one between August '04 and last weekend.

    Re: Third Time Around!

So you came back for more! We ordered Sandi's replacement a couple of months ago. It was due at the port (Port Hueneme, CA) on 4-5. We hope to have delivery by this coming weekend, 4-15. Hard to believe it's been three years (took delivery in May of '04) and 45K miles.

This one is Barbera Red with Creme Beige Pearl leather, dark birch, black top. While that color combo is not officially listed as available, our dealer (Steve Thomas BMW, in Camarillo CA) placed the order that way and BMW accepted it.

We'll probably do the DE again, as we understand the program has changed substantially. Might even take advantage of Stan and Pat's generous offer to visit them as well.

After almost a year with a 2006 650i I am amazed. The only reasons I have gone to the dealer were - an oil change at 11K miles, new windshield wipers for the winter and an iPod installation. Much better than my 745i.

The other day I while driving this car I made two decisions. The first was to replace this car with another when the lease expires in 2009. The second, since I have the time, is drive east from Colorado to South Carolina for the DE just for the pure enjoyment of driving this car.
