    You may want to try an independant mechanic. Mine used to work for BMW and he is really good at his job. I think he is obsessed about cars..He is in Covina, CA.

    check for coil TSB..

    i just recalled that my dealer had acknolwedged a TSB for coil replacement [ & a TSB for fuel pump malfunction ] which apparently affected 03-04 Z4. It had to do with not having Bremi coils [ or maybe it was the other way around ]. Anyhow incorrect coils would cause surge and cause lean burn .

    And next time as a prevetive measure put some Redline Water wetter in the cooling system. It lowers the surface tension of water.

    yes i think getting to the root is one fo the best course of action. [ albeit reading your update it sounds like they could not pinpoint the cause ]..if you want you can give them some options. Typically heads crack due to heat stress or mechanical stress.

    Mechanical stress would be due to overtightening of the head bolts or tightening them in an incorrect order . In a busy day at a busy dealership there is a good chance of such an occurrence.

    Heat stress is usually due to a lean burning engine or prolonged revving of the engine at high RPM levels. It may have been low on coolant [ because we have a idiot temp gauge ] or it is possible the MAF sensor is dirty or kaput and is causing a lean burn cycle. I would say lean towards a heat stress cause because there are many sensors in the distributor less ignition system which can cause premature explosions or a lean burn.

    PS: check the plug rating [ i think our cars has the platinum 4 resistor style but they should be of the right temp rating; hot plugs can cause heat build up at the heads. ]

    Btw, I called these guys...

    [Bavarian Auto Recycling they have sell used engine, with 2 yrs warranty, about 42K miles on the clock at about $3K. They do leak down test to make sure internals are fine and dyno test it for oil pressure.

    They don't sell the head separately. Also, you gotta be careful in buying a used a head since you don't know what you're getting. It's hard to know whether the engine it's from ever overheated, or properly maintained. It's also hard (as in your case) to visually see some cracks. A friend here in SD had his head cracked on his 530i (same engine as yours) but had warranty on it. I can ask him where he sourced the head. Let's budget, just to throw a number $1K. In addition to the head you will need several seals (head gasket, valve cover, vanos, intake and maybe few others) which I would put at $500. I don't have the tool to lock cams, crank and VANOS, but they are $600 for the kit. So total you're looking at about $2,000. That's just back of the envelope...

    I'm not a mechanic by trade but have worked on several Z on various projects. I enjoy doing it and wouldn't mind helping you out.

    ooops,...Monday's update

    Newest update:
    After meeting with the head service manager and the head mechanic this morning. They were very mindful and considerate on this matter. I still could not get a complete answer as to why/what caused the cylinder head to crack. But I did get an answer from the head mechanic that the cylinder head is "indeed" cracked. After a lot of discussion, their advice was for me to contact customer relations. I've handled complaints before and it will take a little time to gather the exhibits and facts. I sure hope that my complaint will be handle by someone with the proper expertise, and who can help find support to my claim on this matter. Besides, how is it going to reflect on customer relations when they have produced a car that has a history of major problems every 60,000 miles. Also due to the fact that I now have over 140,000 miles and my extended warranty ended at 100,000 miles, chances are slim to none that the extended warranty could have any valid effect in this matter because it's EXPIRED. For example, how do we know that this problem didn't occur some point after 100,000 miles. You see, these are the types of doubts that will be used to discredit why a failure to fix a common repair led to an uncommon repair estimate. And therein lies my argument through the service records. Are these service records substantial enough to convince customer relations that this car may have been poorly built/assembled/repaired. My answer is "YES" the service records very well indicate, and if reviewed objectively by customer relations, that any and or all of these factors have occurred during the history of this car. That's it all for now, I now have a very important task ahead of me. Wish me luck.

    Teddy, I agree with most of what you say...m

    The things that people need to bear in mind is that this is a buyers market, not only from the purchase standpoint but from the parts, service and every other standpoint. Now is the time to negotiate prices. Service centers cannot and do not want to lose customers so they are bending over backwards to make people happy.

    The dealership that you have referred to in your previous posts is the dealership that I do business with and I have a great relationship with every department their. In fact, I am helping them put together the debut of the Z4. So I feel that I can act as an advocate for a valid concern.

    In the mean time, since you and I live in the same neighbor hood, let's get together with a few of the Bay Area Z members who also live in Modesto, and take a look under the hood. We may be able to help you solve your problem. Then we can toss back a few cold ones.

    By the way, we have a club drive on Saturday the 28th. We are meeting in Mt. View and then taking twisties to Half Moon Bay for a bite followed by the PCH to Santa Cruz for dinner.

    I really need to take some time and look around in my area more often...I haven't been keeping up with things in general and there might be some private shops under my is quite interesting the trend that many car owners face...once your warranty is out you start looking for private shops that are obviously cheaper and do the same quality of work...and then sometimes it's safer to go to the casino (joking) for the dealerships and the economy, nothing shows it better than on a Saturday when there is not one customer on the lot and the employees have all been downsized...we live in scary times, save your money folks, we're in for a bumpy ride. Maybe that new X6 will do, keep dreaming.

    I made an appointment this coming Monday to meet with the head manager and the head mechanic to get to the bottom of this issue. I like your insight, I admit I am not an expert on these issues but I will use some of your questions and see how they answer, especially this one...

    As of now, I have not been given any explanation on why th cylinder head cracked. Which goes to show that the dealership is not doing me diligence on this matter. Who knows, maybe they think I will settle on the repair order or trade in my car for a new one. Truly though, thanks for your advice, I need all the ammo I can get on this matter. To be cont...

    Rebuilt head does sound that the head needs to be replaced but you would find a used one from a salvage yard [ low mileage Z4 ]for a much lower price.
    & in the long run it's probably good to go to an independent specialist shop. They will replace it for far less. Do the dealers know why the head cracked; did they overtighten it while replacing the gasket [ was it a OEM or aftermarket gasket; was it a compromise on torque specs ] or was it a heating issue.
    you might want to get to the root of the problem; because if it's a heating issue that caused the crack then the problem will resurface down the road.

    new update...word for word description from dealer

    Got my car back this morning, here is what the invoice said word for word, real interesting on the use of the word "seems" towards the bottom, something really stinks about all of this.

    Customer states oil leaking from the vehicle. Appears to be leaking from the same place that has been fixed previously. Inspect and advise. Parts Warranty?? See shop foreman remove all coils, found spark plug 2 full filled with engine oil. Reported to foreman, cleaned all oil from engine, run engine with coil 2 removed per foreman. Inspected for oil leak while engine running, the oil seems leak out from wall of hole 2. Reported to foreman. Cleaned engine, monitored oil leak with foreman. The leak was not leaking as bad as use to. Unable to tell where is leaking from. Cleaned engine again. Have the team leader took vehicle home for longer test run. Recheck next morning. Found hole 2 has leak. Added dye into oil. Send Porter out for road test, reinspected for leak, unable to see dye anywhere, not even on deep stick. Dye is bad? Cleaned engine once again. Sprayed glass cleaner on hole 2 wall, applied baking soda on cleaner. Send Porter out reinspected after road test. The baking soda with oil can be seen clearly hanging on spark plug hole. "The head seems cracked." Inspected by foreman. Applied epoxy as best possible. Slight leak still present. Recommendations, replacing cylinder head.

    Oh, I almost forgot to mention that throughout these last few days while my car was being test driven, I now have a new quite noticeable scratch/ding on the rear lower right corner of my bumper.
